If 4 people book a holiday (one booking, I'm the lead name) and one of the party cannot go, for any reason, I take it everyone else can still go?!
I don't want to get to check-in and they tell us that everyone has to fly or nobody can.

Yes the rest can still go . There wont be any refund though for the person that cannot fly if this flight is imminent . There are other options depending on whether this is a flight only or a package . i.e you could do a name change for a fee. if its a budget flight only this wouldnt be worth the cost but if its a package holiday the fee is normally £30-50 for a name change.

It's a package holiday, but we fly on the 14th, and we can't do a name change, as the person in question may still be able to come. Basically she's waiting on a passport arriving. It's her own fault for leaving it so late to apply, but there is still a possibility it'll be here in time according to the ips. I'm not so sure lol.

should be Ok if its just a renewal. Ive just had my sons passport back . It took 3 weeks including a new set of photos needing to be done in between and that that just the orinary standard service. Ive had renewals back in less than a week before .you can check its progress here http://www.ips.gov.uk
xzibit my sons passport just came back, only took 10 days. it was only a renewal though but sent it normal delivery no pay & check service. Hope it comes in time. 
In addition, if the passport arrives after you have gone it should be possible for them to join you. You have booked and paid for four people and unless YOU cancel or change that, the holiday will remain for four people including your return flight.
It's for a first passport. She has an interview saturday morning, and the ips have told her she can expect to have her passport 4-5 working days after her interview. So that'll be Thursday/Friday, and we fly Monday.
If it was to come after we have gone, and she doesn't fly out with us, I'd imagine she would have to find her own flight back too? As I thought if you didn't use the outward flight, the return was automatically cancelled? Or is it different for charter flights?

She would only need to find her own flight there. You have already booked and paid for the return flight. This happens suprisingly often and its 90% down to "oops wheres my passport syndrome!" 
Oh really! Well that's very handy to know as I thought she'd have to get a different return flight too!!

It is my understanding that if you don't turn up for your outward flight, the return section is cancelled, unless you contact them in advance and make arrangements. I definitely think you should check this out beforehand and not risk just turning up for the return flight!
Memet, I agree with you. Make sure the travel company know what is happening, or they will cancel the return journey....

That's normally the case but if the passport has not arrived by say the Saturday before travel it may be possible to change the outward flight date. A fee will probably be charged but could be possibly cheaper than a return flight, which may be expensive at this late date.
It's all a bit iffy I know, lets hope the passport arrives in time.

Sorry, yes, good sense to contact your T/O. But, had this issue working in Cyprus and in Spain the seats are kept right up until check in closes.
Well it may be worth a call to the operator then to check and make some arrangements if it's not here by the Saturday. It could arrive on the Monday morning though lol, as we aren't leaving for the airport until 11am.

but the passport dudes are pretty good, mangaed to get mine in 24 hrs after it got boil washed (5th visit to the wash!) and promptly fell apart at check in!

I have just had a text saying my friend has recieved her passport today!
So that was about 3 and a half weeks from application to recieving it!!
