There are plenty of places to ring from - hotels, shops and it is very cheap. Certainly cheaper than using your mobile. The length of call is "metered" and then you just pay at the counter.
If you want to phone a lot and are in Goa for several weeks/months then an Indian sim card might be an option. If on the other hand you only need to phone once or twice then the cost last year was about £1 for about 8-10 mins from an STD booth. The price of these does vary, they tend to be more expensive in main tourist areas.
I used the booths a couple of times last year it was 30 rupees for a few minutes.
If you are only phoning home a couple of times you will be better off, using the phone booths, I have paid as little as 50rps for a 20 minute call, in front of you whilst you are on the phone is a meter telling you how much your bill is, if you are using the phone for many calls it is easier to get an indian sim card.
Absolutely dirt cheap from the phone kiosks, whether calling a landline or a mobile, we always ring all our friends and relatives around the world and catch up whilst there!
May I ask something on you thread llindabrad I have been told the person who you call on their mob in the uk has to pay for the call from india is this true ?

I don't think that that is the case, but it will certainly be interesting to see what answers you get. I know when I have used my vodafone mobile in India the cost when I get home is terrible. Given that Vodafone is advertised all over Goa now, I would have thought that I could use my Vodafone Passport for cheap calls
Miccie, unfortunately Vodafone Passport doesnt work in Goa as India isnt one of the countries included
When we are in Goa we also use the phone booths, Sammy's place outside Sun Village, he's a really nice person, you can have great conversations with him, and we swear that he is cheaper than the guy just along the road from Marinha. It's just as much a social thing we us as the telephoning home.
Miccie ive got an Indian Sim card now (Idea) it comes in very handy. Before that I used to use the little booths as well, they are dirt cheap, very good value. I like having the sim card tho cos I can text everyone at home. Its good to wind them all up in November when its cold and rainy here and you are lying in the PS. Vodafone passport wasnt any use in Las Vegas either
Bit but when I was in Brazil in the last week or 2 ..o2 took 4 txs of my allowance for every tx I sent home ..I phoned them on monday and asked them does this work in the rep/ of ireland and they said yes ..I also asked them would it work that way when we go to india in november but they said no it does not work out there thats a pity .......
A text from O2 home costs me 50p per text from India. We have got an indian sim card, which we converted to a lifetime one in March, they said we had to use it at least once in 6 months to keep it active. So, we tried it last week. Guess what - no signal, it obviously doesn't work here. Got to wait now till November to see if it is still active. Must say though, it is so useful to text home. I text my girls from the indian sim and they text me back on to my O2 one. Cheap for both of us then.
Yes thats the way I do it as well Polly its the best idea I reckon.
If you are abroad and someone calls you, they pay the UK bit and you get charged from here to wherever and back again so dont bother.
In Goa we hae aways used the Kiosks much much cheaper. In Nino's nook for e.g. it cost me 38 rupees for 30 minutes, Its cheaper than the beer.
ginlizzy thanks for that we will be near nino,s this time so I will deffo be going there
polly my lifetime indian sim works from the uk ok and has done for a couple of years when i am back??!! strange, should be able to get it sorted out though i would think...
Thanks Chilly. We have just put the indian sim in the phone again and left it. It took ages, but eventually got a signal so have sent a couple of text messages. Just hope it works when we get back out there in November, can't see why it won't now we have used it.
