I have to disagree with it being freezing anytime of year. We went up in August 2 years ago. I reckon it was about 20C at the top of the cable car. Lovely weather. If going in August I would go with T-shirt and have a jumper/light jacket to hand just in case.

Does anyone know roughly how often the Teleferico cable-car is closed due to high wind. We went last week and it was closed. Should we be better in May?

Any answers appreciated

Don't know how often it is closed but if you check the website http://www.telefericoteide.com it will tell you if it is currently operating. Just go to the 'Information in Real Time' page.

we went up last week and it was fine - a bit windy. but beware 25 euros each to go up seems a bit of a rip off to me!

Mount Teide seems to erupt roughly once every 100 years the last one being in 1909 so it seems one may be due. I haven't read reports anywhere of increasing activity on the mountain so I wouldn't be worried.
Sicily, Italy has a very active volcano (Mt.Etna) that erupts pretty often but it doesn't stop people planning and taking holidays there.
Enjoy your holiday.

IF YOU LOOK DOWN IT YOU WILL READ

"Access to the now extinct volcano"

or try this link

In most lists of still active Volcanoes in the world, Teide is listed as active but dormant. Not extinct, though it can be difficult to distinguish between the two . Extinct usually means that there hasn't been an eruption for 10,000 years.

Go to Tenerifenews.com for comments on potential eruption, go and enjoy your holiday

Hi, just thought id share a few thoughts with you about the question of a possible eruption of Teide..... After a very small piece about it in The Sun newspaper today i decided to do a little research on the internet, it was said in The Sun (and i have noticed someone else has mentioned it) that Teide erupts around every 100 years.... everything i have read on the internet does not indicate this!! There have been a number of eruptions in the past the last one being 1909, prior to that it was 1706, 1705 and 1704. and before that as far back as the 13th Century.... So hardly every 100 years. All this said I honestly dont think its something you need to worry about. I go to Tenerife every year and it has never been of concern to me, or the approximate 1.5 million other Brits that visit the island every year.

The way i look at it, if its going to happen then there isnt anythin anyone can do about it, so why put off a holiday 'just incase'...?!?

Wikipedia has plenty of info regarding Mount Teide if anyone is interested in reading about it further.

Just thought id share that as I LOVE Tenerife.... and would certainly never let the prospect of a potential volcanic eruption deter me from going there and enjoying myself, at the same time as getting an amazing tan of course!!!!! lol.

Enjoy Reefy everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the area surounding mount Teide is wonderful - and walking along some of the walking routes are fantastic - but the cable car is a total rip-off - how can they justify charging 25 euros! they are just taking advantage of tourists..............I loved Tenerife when we went in Jan, but thought this just tick the mickey.

Going as a family in august and wondered how much it would cost to visit, are there any excursions from Playa de la Americas?

Take a look at a website called tenerifesunshine. They have loads of trips and stuff to do all over the island
I am sure you will find something for all of the family.

Thanks for the website there are lots of interesting trips, Mount Teide is only 12.50 euros for a half day for transport excluding cable cars which are 25 each per adult and cheaper for children, or a full day is 19.50 visiting Teide- Icod-Garachico-Masca. Which one does anyone recommend?

We did the Teide-Icod-Garachico-Masca trip last year, it was a very long day, most of the time is spent on the coach and you don't get a huge amount of time at each stop, just long enough to take a few photos and pop in a souvenir shop
The longest stop is lunch in Garachico. If you're lucky and it's a clear day you may be able to see La Palma island on the horizon, but Garachico is not the most interesting place.
Icod (with the dragon tree) is a lovely place but it was a very short stop! :-? Masca is quite breathtaking, and reminded me of La Gomera island.

There is an excursion which does Teide and Loro Parque in one day HERE, we did that one a few years ago - you get a little less time in Loro Parque than you would have on a single Loro Parque trip, but at least you get to see both places and we had more time at Los Roques de Garcia to take in the views of Teide and the Caldera de las Canadas crater than the amount of time allowed on the Teide-Icod-Garachico-Masca trip.

Off the subject of Teide :offtop one excursion I would recommend is the guided coach tour over to La Gomera HERE - including the ferry crossing, an informative coach tour around La Gomera with lots of photo stops, and lunch in the Valle Gran Rey with a demonstration of "El Silbo" - the whistling language used to communicate across the steep ravines (barrancos).
