I've got an Excel sheet with all my holiday stuff on it, always a good tip to save having to rack your brain every year! :D I'll post some of them on here later

Small screwdriver? Great for getting free air ... erm, i mean, has many uses ;)

We like boiled eggs for our breakfast, so we always take some cheap plastic egg-cups.

When booking accommodation try and see what sort of cooking facilities there are. In some cases you only get a couple of hot-plates, in others you get a full cooker complete with oven. The choice depends on how much cooking you want to do.

Often SC accomodation will have a microwave nowadays so it is worth checking before you go. If you can't find the info you can always ask on our forums :)

A few plastic bags and bin liners are always useful. Also a few j-cloths and some sponge scourers don't take up much space or weight allowance.

We tend to now holiday in privately owned apartments which often have little extras included. It is always useful to have an extra tea towel though. The last one in June had lots of little extras like tea, coffee and sugar in the cupboard left from previous holidaymakers - all perfectly ok. We left behind stuff as well.

I also keep a list on the pc and just take off any self catering items if we are in a hotel.

Empty margarine/ice-cream tubs do the job, cost nothing and can be binned at the end of the holiday. When we've done SC, I've taken sandwich bags to wrap all sorts of things in (sliced fruit, hard-boiled eggs, pieces of cake etc) for days out.
Packet noodles, packets of pasta in sauce and savoury rice are all very light in the suitcase and can all be added to fresh meats/sausages/vegetables from the local supermarket to make a nice evening meal. Fill the fridge with cans of pop to take out and bottles of wine etc for sitting on the balcony.
Definitely take a couple of tea towels, a dishcloth and pan-scrub, and washing line and pegs.

We don't usually do that much actual cooking when we go self-catering and apart from something for that first cup of tea and coffee when we arrive, we don't bother taking much in the way of supplies with us but we always take the following:

1) Ice-cube bags - if there is an ice cube tray in the freezer compartment it's never big enough to keep up with the rate at which we go through them for our 'sundowners' on the balcony each evening!

2) A corkscrew - you can never rely on there being a decent one in the kitchen drawer.

3) I have even been known to take one my own decent kitchen knives as the ones provided always seem to be blunt.

4) A small old and battered metal teapot because there's rarely one provided.

5) A small travel kettle so we don't have to boil water in a pan.

6) A jar of Marmite!

Always take a corkscrew, and the ice cube bags are a great idea, as not only does it mean you get more ice, but they seem to freeze quicker in ice cube bags :)
We always take things like dishtowels / scourers, can or wine coolers (ye know, those gel things), a wine pourer (handy to seal the bottle too), and some of those re-sealable food bags you get, along with black bags, carrier bags ... handy for all occassions

Take some pegs and rope too, if you want to do some washing, or get one of those twisty ropes where you don't need pegs, very handy

Sellotape for wrapping pressies / alchohol :D
Matches - very few cookers have self-lighters

Sewing kit - you never know!

An ice pack you can put ice cubes in - for the wife, not me!! :rofl

I'm sure there are many more things

A cool bag, one of the ones that folds down easily to go in the case and two freezer block thingys. For picnics on the beach etc
Must have used it a dozen times last year in the Algarve.

Don't forget a small plastic funnel for filling your ice-cube bags from the water bottles!

If you book sc check if the air con is included in the price. Years ago it was part of the cost but you'll find that most apartments charge for it now. This can add quite a bit to the cost of your hol. There is also usually a charge for the use of the safe.
You may need to take a hairdryer - again check to see if one is provided.

Hair staighteners..never leave home without mine ;)

also a small medical kit ie a few plasters, antiseptic cream, lotion for bites and stings... and plenty of paracetamol to help you out with those hangovers! :D

oh yeah...and maybe a couple of extra coat hangers, because theres never enough in the appartments!

This is a really interesting topic for me as I own a self catering villa and it's good to see what people find useful.

I think I provide everything on the list so far and although I don't use it all myself, it's good to know someone will at sometime!!

As pippa said, privately owned accommodation tends to be better equipped, especially if it's used alot by the owners themselves.

Sometimes stuff can have a loose thread and before you know it, you have a loose hem....

So I always take some of the cheap *Wonder web* equivalent which can be bought in shops for around £1

Does the job in seconds. :tup

I also take resealable sandwich bags - great for putting your suntan lotions (and other lotions and potions) in
to take down to the pool/beach.
(Infact I pack the lotions and potions in them too - just incase there are any spillages in the case during transit.)

we have 2 apartments in Bulgaria, even though we have the basics in there we are also trying to think what else would be useful to people.

Tin Opener
Iron
Ironing Board

if these were in our apartments this would save a little on the luggage allowance saves taking a travel iron.

Anymore ideas would be great

What is always useful is a selection of kitchen tools such as spatulas, wooden spoons, a draining spoon and a sieve. A cheap plastic measuring jug comes in handy for when you want to make up such things as packet soups.
