Got back on Sunday after a delay of about 2 hours due to the fantastic thunder storm - was a sight to behold!
Turunc is a lovely, lovely place. We did feel quite isolated due to the fact that there was no way I was going back on that mountain road until we left!! On saying that we took the water taxi quite a few times to Amos which is a gorgeous little bay about 15 minutes boat ride away and had a day out on a boat trip.
We were supposed to stay at the Ozcan Hotel on bed and breakfast but on arrival, it appeared that he didn't have our booking (we think the hotel had overbooked) so the manager put us in the Gul Pansiyon which was just across the road and he upgraded us to AI which we thought was good of him... how wrong we were!
We used the hotel restaurant for two dinners, one lunch and three breakfasts - the food was disgusting. Processed meat, no choice of main courses or desserts and the salads were the same every time. What really put us off was when we chose a salad which we thought had mushrooms in it only to find they were cold chips! Also if you weren't down at the start of service, you couldn't get a table as people just stayed at their tables all night due to the free drinks. The hotel had a mix of mainly Russian and Polish with a smattering of Dutch and British
Even the breakfast was a poor imitation of what we have experienced in the past.
I can't comment on what the bedrooms were like as we never actually got to see one.
The reception and waiting on staff were unfriendly and most of the time, it appeared to be too difficult for them to give you an answer to anything and getting a smile was impossible.
We were chatting to another couple who had had the same experience as us - they had been put in another hotel but they moved to the main hotel after a day or two.
We decided that we would stay at the Gul as it was lovely - small, quiet and spotless. Set right on the beach, we had a studio apartment with a small kitchenette area.
As we had decided not to eat at the hotel, we bought breakfast goods and had breakfast on the balcony and ate out most evenings.
We had lovely food at Memin - a tiny little place on the front. We also ate at Fidan and Korfez which in our opinion was one of the nicest places we have eaten at, good food, great service and reasonable prices. On average we spent around 50 lira on our evening meal which included a couple of drinks and tip. Excellent value.
A couple of nights, we just had pide and lamachun or a takeaway kebab
Despite the rocky start, we had a fabulously relaxing holiday which is just what we needed.
Although Turunc is lovely, I don't think we will go back - the road down the mountain was just too much for me!
Mrs Gannet ...thanks for sharing your holiday with us...sorry to hear about the bad food problems with the AI..but glad that you found many other places to eat and enjoy your holiday...
Our daughter used to be terrified, now she thinks nothing of it.
I remember the first time we went over it years ago I'm sure it was much worse than it is now, although I'm not sure whether it just seemed it.
I have heard that the Ozcan is extremely cheap, hence the poor quality food. One of things the locals complain about is the number of people staying in AIs' which cause all the small restaurants to struggle. Although it appeared quite busy there this summer, many of the holidaymakers were not spending any money apparently, so things weren't as good as they looked.
Yes, that is happening pretty much all over unfortunately.
It did seem to be quiet in the resort and on talking to a few restaurant and shop owners, the AIs are not doing the resort any favours at all which is a big shame as the local restaurants produce some fantastic food.
