Just got back so I can pass on my limited experiences ! We went with a list of HT recommendations determined to try some new ones this time but our first attempt, Kim Farr was expensive and mediocre. The aromatic crispy duck, a smallish portion of breast meat was as if it had been microwaved and that alone was R685. We had a portion of noodles and a sweet and sour to share to follow and the whole bill with a couple of drinks each was £30.
Based in Arpora we decided to stick to the local places we know. 3 meals at J&A's brilliant Italian but slightly pricey...share crostini to start, a couple of pizzas and then their brilliant chocolate puds together with a bottle of wine ( Indian Zinfandel was very pleasant) and a bottle of water will set you back R2700. A special dinning experience but worth every bit.
For a more budget minded non Indian meal we went to Spice Oven 4 times where a few beers, a couple of starters and a couple of fillet stakes will set you back R1200.
Honey Rest & Bar Rest in the village centre was a disappointment. Last time we went we ate there twice. The first time was very good hence another visit which turned out as awful. This time we tried them twice more and the food can be described as big portions of average food. OK, but for us it was three times and out.
Nicks Place, a new modern, bright and clean establishment is very handy for the Marinha Dourada and it's appearance ticks the boxes for tourist. The food was acceptable but the dining experience ruined by a table of heavy smokers next to us who ignored the no smoking signs
Our favourite for Indian and Goan has to be Starlight. This place is largely ignored by the tourists but gets lots of local trade. The food is superb and very cheap. Eat well for as little as R500 including a few beers. From the outside it looks a bit dingy, the toilets are apparently in need of updating but the dining experience makes up for it. Few people followed my recommendation but those that did were delighted. We ate there a dozen times and didn't suffered any consequences! Ask for Ravi and he will help you choose a suitable dish ! Eating here will certainly help combat the falling value of the £ and allow you to indulge occasionally too.

Yes Keith, we usually use the Vrundavan lunchtime when i have dragged Roy round the shops!! Brilliant! Still as good as ever!
Have also heard about the new restaurant that has opened by the MD, must give it a try.
Used to go to the Starlight as it was quite convenient for us. The cockroaches didn't taste very nice as they dropped from the ceiling into your food!! :really

Cockroaches in Starlight... you should stick with the veg option ! Seriously we didn't have any such problems but we almost trod on a live snake walking home .

Did someone mention a SNAKE :yikes :yikes

I visited the starlight and ordered sweet and sour chicken and plain rice - chicken came but no rice, waited, waited waited, aha, here it is :tup chicken is now cold so I politely inform the waiter of this fact "but the rice is hot" says the waiter accompanied by the usual head wobble, yes, but the chicken is now cold says I, "but the rice is hot" says the waiter, this conversation happened a third time - I had two mouthfuls, pushed the plate away and made my exit. Sorry, not impressed (although it might just have been an "off" night. :que

I have been going to the Starlight for the past 10 years and so have friends that live here even in monsoon, the food is good for a local restaurant and i have never seen a cockroach, and even if i did hey its india for god sake whats new about that, bet the marriot even has a few of them lurking in the corner some where, cant fault the food or the service we are given when we go there. :tup

For Nicks Place, turn right coming out of the MD and it's about 100metres on the left, just after the right turn that takes you through the woods to Arpora Village.

Thanks Dave, having an argument with OH, he's convinced it must be Aubergine, although I'm telling him that it's not as far up as that from what you have said.

Really interesting Gooner Fan. Tried a few places on the list. Really like Fiesta but its so dark - can hardly see in front of yourself! :(
Miccie didnt try Nicks Place, but heard that it was "ok" but nothing to write home about.

Welcome back Gemma, thanks for that re Nicks Place, I shall have a little look next week!! Trust you went to see Souymen? hope he was well, really looking forward to our first meal there.

I have to say I found Soueymans Kitchen much nicer than I 95, which I thought was a bit overpriced and was quite empty when we went. Looking forward to all those lovely meals, 2 weeks today :hols

Yes Miccie we went to Soumyens Kitchen, very nice as per usual. After 7 also very good. Polly50 took us along to the Thai Restaurant at the Mira Hotel, also very nice and definitely worth a try.

Interesting link to the food critic. Pleased he agreed with me on J & A's, not sure were he was coming from on the user friendly bit. We found everything perfect.
For food I disagree about Hotel Venite too. 10/10 for ambience agreed.Food 4.
At the end of the day we are all likely to expect and like different things. Going on someone elses recommendation always is taking a chance. However, when lots of people are singing from the same hymn book it does suggest you're on to a winner.
I have to say, Max13biker seems to have my kind of taste too , his recommendations are to be investigated ! Thanks Max.
