I would say Edinburgh is a lot cheaper on average. I've been working in Edinburgh of late and it's not too bad for prices for a capital city. You have the option of Wetherspoons right in the city centre behind Princes Street which means you can fill up cheaply before moving on. I would imagine the hotels are generally cheaper as well, I often stay at good chain hotels for less than £70 per night (not me paying though).

I went to Dublin in May........i thought it was VERY expensive. Nearly 4 euros for a pint...... :really , even a cup of coffee was 3 euros ! It was a lovely city to tour round though, the Guiness tour was good. We got a bus to go round and that cost us 14 euros each.

I would say 4 euros for a pint in Dublin is doing well, a lot of the Temple Bar pubs were charging 4.20-4.50 euros a pint back in 2006. Of course there is better value to be had away from that area, but any first visit is going to be centred pretty much around Temple Bar, especially in the evening.

BTW 4 euros = £3.30 say, that isn't unheard of in a lot of UK city centre establishments these days if you ask me. I live in Norwich and bar Wetherspoons, most pints are £3+ a pop.

If you enjoy your nights out and social drinking those are the prices you have to put up with now. :really

was in temple bar at begining of september.
It was alot of fun but the beer prices are just extortion, espcially with the stronger euro.
In the famous temple bar pub it was around 6 euros for a beer! most other places where coming in at around 5.00-5.50 euros a pint.
Had a great time but you need a morgage.
Edinburgh is a lot more reasonable and had a great time there as well. Drinks are much fairer in price and didnt feel like an expensive time.
Hope this helps! ;)

Jessop,

I must admit that those were the prices I was expecting to see in Dublin now that it is nearly three years since we last went. As I said it was 4-4.5 euros back in 2006 and with inflation etc 5euros+ has to be the norm. At the end of the day though as long as people keep going and paying those prices (which no doubt they are) it will only continue to rise which is a shame because Dublin is a good 2/3 night break. If hotel accommodation was cheap you could cope with your evening costs being more expensive but we all know that isn't the case.

The only bit of advice I can give people thinking of Dublin (and that includes me possibly for my birthday next month) is to try and get away from Temple Bar during the evening. Sure by all means enjoy the area, but it isn't the be all and end all of Dublin pubs. Just a 10min walk away from the area will give you cheaper options, but don't expect 3euro pints these days!!!

I've always found the pubs north of the Liffey to be cheaper plus of course you get to see the real Dublin. Some people might say that areas off O'Connell and Parnell Square could be considered a bit iffy at night, but I've never once had an issue either drinking in those pubs or indeed just walking around the area.

I used to love this website but it looks as though the price tables have not been updated for a while. Still it not only gives you an idea of which pubs are cheaper than others, but if you want to just research on different areas it is very handy for that.

It's quite amazing to think that the Cocoon bar was selling pints of Heineken for 7euros back in 2006!!! What on earth are they charging now?

From the above posts I got a feeling that people are saying Dublin is more expensive, but watch out dude, what I found was that Edinburgh was also expensive if we compare it with London. Glasgow is cheap but I will not recommend you to go there. Keep your pocket heavy if you want to visit Dublin or Edinburgh.

Recently returned from Dublin and paid 6 euros a beer in the temple bar area :yikes

Incidently I would recommend Glasgow - :offtop but great bars - stylish and of various designs - wide selection of good eating houses - many within walking distances of each other - fairly good service and generally better atmosphere than lots of different cities. And no i do not live there.

i know what you mean, i have paid up to 6euros for a beer (and more for a spirt) in temple bar, id say on average though the price would be about 5euro where as in edinbourgh the prices are quite similar to most big citys in the UK, in saying this though during the festival local buisenesses tend to cash in a bit and raise there prices slightly. :cheers
