Take a look at Port El Kantaoui. A pretty newish resort near Sousse, with a marina full of expensive boats from all over the world. Hotels here can be half or full board.

Aslemma, is it relatively cheap to eat out there? We would like to try some authentic food rather than British style. Also are there supermarkets there to get bread, cheese, fruit, drinks etc.?

Yes to all of those questions Kedi. There is a supermarket right near the Marina in PEK where you will be able to pick up most of the things you may need (including wine). A lot of the things you will recognise from home now that so much of our stuff comes from Europe. Incidentally, when I've been self-catering I've taken a few packets of sauce-mix, as they're easy and light to carry. There are a load of restaurants round the area, all doing nice food at reasonable prices, as well as a couple of more expensive ones. Prices are on the boards outside so you shouldn't get many nasty surprises!! Many of them do seem to cater for more of the 'international' brigade, with pizzas, steaks, pancakes etc. (and beautiful icecreams) but you should be able to find some more authentic Tunisian dishes. Go into Sousse and have a wander into the Medina for a taste of the real Tunisia. You can get fresh fish and meat there and bread which is still hot.

Those who know me on here may be surprised that I'm singing the praises of PEK when I'm a devotee of Sousse itself, but if you're looking for an apartment, rather than going S/C at an hotel, the best ones are certainly in PEK. Many hotels throughout Tunisia do provide self-catering, or bed and breakfast, so that might be another option,

When we visited Tunisia we stayed in the Thomsons Hotel Salem in Sousse (right on the beach). We flew into Monastir airport which is the nearest to Sousse. If I remember right the transfer time was not too long, maybe about 45 mins. We used to go by taxi some evenings into nearby PEK. Taxis are very cheap.

Cant offer any advice on self catering but sure other posters will give good advice. Would certainly go back to Tunisia. Lovely beaches and we loved the Medina in Sousse.

Nearest airport is Monastir and transfer takes about 30-40 minutes. Sometimes however it can work out cheaper to fly into Tunis with BA if you are going d.i.y. and you do get a far more generous baggage allowance with them. The transfer takes about 1.5 hours but if you book this with Med Hotels it will cost you £6.26 p.p. e/w. Sousse is not far from PEK and taxis are cheap, or you can use the 'noddy train' or tuktuks.
