I'm going on a cruise to the Caribbean and Mexico. Is it best to take sterling and change it on board or is it advisable to take US dollars? Presumably the exchange rate on board will be poor.

Yes the exchange rate on cruise ships is usually much poorer than you would even get in the UK. You shoud get a better rate in resort, but look out for high commission charges on changing small amounts.
