I' haven't been to Goa yet (hoping to next year) so I'm learning new things all the time

They used different shacks and never had to pay,

Can someone explain the above to me please I thought that the whole purpose of shacks was to buy food and drinks? How come they didn't have to pay? Am I missing something.

Shirley I think the poster means paying for the sunbeds to lie at the shacks. Most dont charge anything. But some charge 100 rupees to use their shack and lie on their bed. On top of that you buy your food and drinks and then the charge for the bed is on your bill at the end of the day.

Yer, thanks Gemma. I take for granted that readers know what I mean, because it comes up so often re charges by some shacks and not from others. Best to ask before you settle down on a sunbed if you don't want to be charged. I know it is cheap compared to european resorts, who all charge for beds, but Goa never used to, at any shacks, as long as you ate lunch and bought drinks all day, and for two people for 3 weeks it all adds up, particularly as some days they only got 65r to the pound.

What sort of things can you donate to the animal rescue centre please ??

Usually when you walk along the beach and boys try and get you into their shack they will say something like "come in my shack, free sunbed etc etc" or as Moles said just ask

Hi shirleyv, there is a list of needs on their website. Just google Animal Rescue Goa. My son and his wife took some stuff on the list that wasn't too heavy to pack, i.e latex gloves, plastic aprons, flea medication. (They also accept old books, clothes, to be sold locally). They also bought some large bags of dog biscuits in the supermarket and took them, as the regular feed at the centre is usually just a little fish and lots of rice. It is a treat for them to have biscuit meal mixed in with it.
A word of warning though, if you are an animal lover, it will be quite upsetting if you visit the centre. They spay and neuter all the animals and treat illness and injury, but then the animals are released back out to fend for themselves, as no-one is too interested in re-homing them. They can't just keep them in the kennels for ever.
I visited ARK in Kerala in November after contacting them to rescue a beach dog. He was treated with anti-biotics and de-loused, kept for a week or so and then had to be released back onto the beach. I just donated money and bought bags of dry biscuits for the centre, but both times I visited I was overcome with sadness and too upset to stay long. The cruelty to some of these animals is beyond just neglect.
