Spain and Greece are much cheaper than Turkey now for eating out and drinking, prob cos of the crunch and they are lowering prices to make a bit of money but Turkey seems to be getting MORE dearer! :que

Wow!
Thanks everybody for taking the time to reply to my post, the replies just go to show that everybody is different and has different opinions about the same things.
I've read all the replies and it's been interesting.
To be honest, I didn't expect a unanimous 'yes or no' answer.

Where do I start?
ellie_meg, thanks for your links to Akyaka - it does look lovely but I think the transfer from the airport would be too long for us.

JMK
we're most certainly NOT looking for places that cater for the Brits - anywhere that advertises 'Bangers & Mash' or 'Sunday Roast' is given a VERY wide berth!

Thanks to all who suggested alternative places and to everybody who commented on the cost of food & drink - I'm still confused whether it's cheaper than Greece or Spain.
But, it's too late 'cos we've booked now! :hols

We fancied Turgitreis as we know we can get on the dolmus and visit other resorts on the Bodrum Peninsula for days out.

To be honest, what put us off Turkey for the last few years is that most of the flights seem to leave Turkey in the early hours of the morning.
We HATE that.
To us, it spoils the last day of your holiday even if you can keep the room on.
We like to up, have breakfast then be off to the airport.

Anyway, we found day flights from Stansted leaving Bodrum at 15:00 so we've booked the Irme Otel in Turgutries, B&B for 2 weeks in June.
Any comments (positive or negative) would be appreciated. We've read all the reviews we can find.
We're used to 2* hotels in Goa and s/c rooms in Greece, we 're OK with basic as long as it's clean (and kept clean).
We don't expect 5* luxury.

We'll try to find lokantas serving traditional food, I'm sure that we'll have a great time. :sun2

Wizard, we've been to Nerja and loved it.

Thanks again, everybody.
What would we do without sites like this?

im glad you got something sorted in the end, hope you have a lovely holiday, but the transfer to akyaka from dalaman and turgutreis from bodrum are similar give or take 5-10 mins, unless you mean uk side :think

hi ellie_meg

I looked at the map and thought that Akyaka looked much further than that. I guess I ought to have asked that question too. :duh

To be honest, we think we've got a pretty good deal.
The flights alone from Stansted to Bodrum would cost almost £500 (Thos Cook).

I looked for day flights from Dalaman and the nearest I could find on Travelsupermarket.com for a similar return time (Thomson) were more than we've paid for the total holiday - and that includes our transfers too.

We usually go long haul Feb/March time and again Oct/Nov so our 2 week summer holiday is an extra 'cheapie' that we like to squeeze in.
But we are a bit 'picky' and like to choose our resort/accommodation so last minute deals are not for us.

I'm sure we'll have a good holiday, I'll do a report on the resort & hotel when I get back.

never mind you can always try there another time, its about 45 mins to akyaka from dalaman , depending on driver and traffic etc, as long as youre happy with your deal thats the main thing, flight prices to turkey this year are very high, but easy jet have had some good prices, ive got 3 so far booked with them for this year , we like to visit other resorts to see other areas of turkey but nothing in our opinion beats the beach and scenery of akyaka, happy hols :sun2
sadly we did have a horrendous experience in turgutreis with my little daughter that im going through ros to sort out , so that sadly put us off

Hi Prettypollycat

Glad you have got your holiday sorted, I think a wise choice!!! :tup

You are going to be sooooooooooo gobsmacked when you see the changes in Turgutries since 98... Gone are the dusty roads it is a dual carrigeway now right through from the airport to Bodrum, they still have the fab Saturday market and a beautiful marina. We have English friends who live there full time and LOVE it, which i'm sure you will do.

We nearly bought a place in the next resort Kadikalasi (hence the screename "kadi") but decided on Bitez. There is a georgous fish restaurant tucked away on the beach, very Shirley Valentine... not many people know about it - giz a shout if you want details on it.

Like you said, you have the whole of the peninsula to visit. You must try Turbuko for the day (its just after Torba, from Bodrum Dolmus station) its Turkeys answer to Saint Tropez. Excellent for people watching! :)

If I can be of any further help, feel free to message me

Well you have definitely chosen well with the Bodrum peninsular and Turgutreis is very nice. As Kadi says have a look round the rest of the peninsular by dolmus. Gumusluk is fairly close to Turgutreis, I think that is where we may be going this year, it is very pretty here and there are some lovely restaurants. Also Torba, Yalikavak and Turkbuku are well worth a visit as well as Bodrum itself.

A lot of the flights do seem to go to Turkey are silly times and the day flights are very expensive but we managed to ook cheap flights to Bodrum with Easy Jet and they are good times, which is good for us as we have two little girls.

We are like you an like to eat in traditional restaurants rather than touristy ones, the food is far better and it always costs a lot less.

Anyway I hope you have a greta holiday :sun2
