Yes this is a scam, it's still ongoing now. Avoid at all costs, if they approach you, just say "no thanks" and walk away.

There are also a lot of (English) timeshare people about at the moment with scratch cards. You get a free scratch card and will almost certainly win, which then involves a trip to their office for a "talk/demonstration" and then they try to sell you a time share property....!!!

We had this a few years back in TEnerife.

We had it in Malta, they're everywhere there.

I just tell them I'm on the dole. They don't want to know you then.

Re Timeshare Touts.
They look for Couples so if you see a tout with the scratch cards just split up while you walk by.
Another thing is to say you live there and they leave you alone.
They are a real pest. It is time that the authorities did something, really really did something.

Cannon, telling them you live here doesn't work!!! I DO live here and when I told one tout that her "boyfriend/bouncer/whatever" said "Yeah right!" I said "I've lived here 7 years mate" and he replied "Good for you" in a very sarcastic way!!! So I told them to eff off and walked off!!! They are a pain in the bum.....!

Another s c a m.

These people are getting really devious because they have copied the logo's of the British tour operators and put them onto a piece of paper on the back of the clipboard which they carry, and giving you the impression that they are officials working for these companies.
They stop you in the street and say something like " can you help us with our survey about your hotel" or "have you a minute to complete our survey to make your hotel better".

Fact: No tour operator would be on the streets asking you questions.
Fact: Any survey about your hotel will be in the form of a questionnaire inside your hotel by the hotel management.
Fact: Any survey in the form of a questionnaire from your tour operator would again be in your hotel or on the plane coming home.

Give them a wide berth unless you want to be conned.

I've seen these people with the clipboards on the beach. They haven't approached me yet. What do they ask if they catch you?

They say something like " can you help us with our survey about your hotel" or "have you a minute to complete our survey to make your hotel better" or "we're doing a survey on the hotels".

Several stopped me and mentioned the words "survey and hotel" in the first sentence, which immediately rang alarm bells, I didn't give them the opportunity to expand any further, but I image it will be a load of bull questions for a few minutes until they get to the nitty grittys offering you a prize/present as a "thankyou" for your co-operation, which no doubt you will have to go somewhere to collect it"¦.the rest is history.

I did say to one of them as I was walking through them, "you must be joking, no tour operator is on the streets of Benidorm" and having been sussed out, they just laughed it off and walked away looking for the next sucker who is hoping to get owt for nowt.........says it all really, no answer, no explanation, just walk away.

But, I did read an article before I went away (can't find it now) that the powers that be in Benidorm, council, hoteliers and traders have had a meeting and are fully aware of these people (las personas de engaño) the people of deception and promise to take action against them.

I only encountered them around the indoor market, particularly on the junction/corner where the scratch card touts have always hung around and stretching down Calle Gerona as far as Villa de Benidorm.

Just say no and walk passed them, but when tourists see copied logo's of Airtours TUI, Skytours and First Choice etc on the back of the clipboard, they look the business....naughty indeed.!

this also happens in the uk you know.those animal wellfare groups.sign up then ask for money.just walk passed them.if they stop you walk on.if you go to them your asking for it.

best thing i have every seen.but funny.is the little lad who has a 5 euro note tied to a fishing line.its on the floor you bend down to pick it up.and its gone.keeps him happy.plus those stuck down coins you can never get up anyway.and the amount of times people bend down thinking its a coin.and it turns out to be chewing chum.

once i saw a guy in ibiza with a metal dectector.thought he had found something big.turn out to be loads of can rings.kids had done it for a laugh.they knew he went on the beach everynight and watched him dig around for ages.

Thanks to HT and Sanji we managed to avoid one of these scams. One afternoon as we were out walking near the Sol Pelicanos, we were approached by a woman with a clipboard. When we heard the words hotel and survey, Helen t and I looked at each other and remembered Sanji's warning ;) We spoke to each other in Welsh and pretended we didn't understand English. As we carried on past her she said in a really sarcastic manner "Don't bother then". Her attitude to our refusal said it all :rofl
