Sorry I can't help specifically with straighteners but I would imagine that they would work similar to hairdryers. When we were in the Dom Rep, I managed to use my hairdryer, although it wasn't as powerful as it is at home. This only meant extra drying time. However, the straighteners probably wouldn't get hot enough to do their job sufficiently. Maybe, someone else here will beg to differ but this is just my experience and opinion.

The voltage in the Dom. Rep is 110volt. so if your straighteners are dual voltage 100-240volt you will have no problem. My Babyliss Pro 200 work perfectly as they are dual voltage and heat up just the same as at home.

To guaranty they work as well as they do in the UK you will need a USA-US-110V-TO-UK-240V-VOLTAGE-POWER-ADAPTOR-CONVERTER .

You can buy this from Maplin electronic shops or from ebay.

hi , i went to the dominican last year and my g h ds would not work, it was a nightmare, this year im off to cuba and going to get myself some cheaper lower voltage straightners to be on the safe side

Its depending on what version of GHD's you have as to whether they will work.

The newest version IV are dual voltage so should work, if they are the older version, they definitely wont work. You can find out your version by the sticker on the inside of them.

I went to DR last year and bought a pair of Nicky Clarke dual (worldwide) voltage and they were brilliant, really hot and as good as my GHD's, will definitley be bringing them again in 49 sleeps !!!

I honestly would consider if taking straighteners in worth it in the first place. I have very curly hair and even the best straighteners in the world couldn't keep it straight in the Caribbean humidity. After 14 holidays and many wasted hours trying I gave in to the curls and wear it up so its away from my face because that makes it more frizzy. I also found that scrunching with wax helped stopped the frizz and protected it from drying out too much in the sun.

Some days the humidity was so high my hair seemed damp all day and there's no way normally curly hair is going to stay straight if its damp.

I've had it braided a couple of times and that makes it really easy but very curly when you get back home.

I'm sorry if this isn't what you want to hear but believe me it won't really matter once you're on that beautiful beach sipping cocktails with your new husband.

As long as you have the GHD mark VI with the dual voltage they work absolulely fine. I had no problems with them at all. I'm so bad I even took a cheap pair of Babyliss worldwide straighteners as a back up and they too worked. They only cost £23!
