I'm afraid so. You will need to contact Atol through their website to start the wheels in motion for your refund.

£2000 down the pan. I only got an e-mail from them on the 15th confirming that my pick up voucher had been changed as the flight time had been changed.

It will be the last time I book something well in advance, I booked my holiday and paid for it on the 5th December 2008 with Freedom direct, I think im ok with the flight side of the booking (just waiting for confirmation of this) But the hotel side and the transfer side of it will present a problem as I dont know whom these were booked with. Thankfully a credit card was used on this occasion.
Im going to stick to the tried and trusted method of booking late as I have mostly done over the years that way might give me less grief, :D

Your credit card will refer you to Atol in this instance as Freedom were an Atol Agent. I've read in the TTG that this collapse is likely to cost the taxpayer £2million as Freedom's bond was only worth £750,000.

Booking early doesnt come into it, I'm afraid. If anything booking late is going to give you less choice and higher prices now the amount of outlets are reducing on what seems like a month by month basis.

Well I still have a flight!!! If there aint a hotel that will be the problem. At least I booked with Visa so I might get something? Any ideas the chances of the hotel booking still be live as it was booked with Med via Freedom but I have a Med booking number? It worked for the flight.

Im told by h4u operator of my flight that most of the hotel bookings were made from Hotels4u.com or possibly an agent.

AgentQ, I have to dissagree with the late deals, eg, Last year I had 5 holidays to Turkey 3 of them were late late deals paying £105, £106, £166, The other 2 were booked in September just after the collapse of Xl these two holidays cost £350 per person for October this of course was due to the demise of xl, Now I know that their arent the same amount of holidays this year, But not many people have the money this year or they are not prepared to spend it, just a hunch but the To's are going to struggle to sell the holidays this year perhaps a whole lot more than last year.
Yes I know companies can go bust at anytime and that goes for them all.

I'm afraid you are wrong regarding the tour ops not selling the packages. Thomas Cook had already sold 50% of their holidays by March. We are as busy as we have ever been.

I think flights that were booked to fly with ThomsonAirways will still be honoured despite Freedom Direct going bust..

Dont quote me on it though!!

First Choice have reported similar positive sales this year.

The capacity that XL Leisure had was never really replaced. Both Thomas Cook and TUI had also cut back capacity this year.

I'm with AgentQ. I think that the reductions in general capacity will mean that prices will generally hold up for at least peak season and £105-£166 bargains will be few and far between if to be found at all.

I've just been reading an article about Freedom Direct and it said that most bookings would be covered by ATOL but those who have booked in the last 2/3 weeks are not covered. This is because Freedom Direct failed to renew their registration with ATOL. I would like to know if, when those people who unfortunately booked very recently, the ATOL logo was being displayed on the Freedom Direct website.

I'm a bit concerned that you think you're booking with an ATOL-protected company but how do you know if they've actually renewed their registration?

Hi roswell ... you can check ATOL numbers and registrations on the CAA website. The CAA recently compiled a list of 100 companies which failed to renew their ATOL licences in March, you can read more about that issue in THIS recent topic.

Thanks for that David. I've bookmarked it for future reference :tup

Thomsonfly are honouring my flight. I have to send them details of payments to Freedom so they can chase with the CAA if required. I just hope that Med Hotels will do the same. I have been told that I wont find out this until Monday. If anyone has been told anything by Med I would appreciate if they could put something here.

Thank god for this site or I would have had no clue that this was happening.

Just sorted out a lovely lady who has been affected by this. She told me she is also still waiting on her refund from XL! How unlucky is that?

For all you travelling in September to Turkey, Monarch have some reasonably priced flights and Hotels4U (Thomas Cook owned) have some good acomm prices. I'd like to think your money would be safe with them.

Hi Govan Jaggie

I think we're in a similar situation as yourself.I spoke to someone from thomsons today who said flights reservations are still in place and they would honour to then chase the CAA.Not sure on the accomodation front though as i dont know if FD used a agent to book the HSB.Can you tell me how your going to find out if accomodation will be honoured too? Thanks in anticipation

Same here folks, Airline carrier looks as though they have been paid for that part, But finding the supplier of the Hotel / Transfer looks like a no go.

Med Hotels have e-mailed to say that they will have a better idea on Monday when they have spoken to Abta. Freedom have said that all holidays have been paid for by them so they should be honoured so hopefully Med will go with that and no try to fleece more money.

am i right in thinking that if i have my e-tickets then the flights have already been paid for & i will still be able to fly??
