With the prices you've been quoted I'd definately say have the car for the week, you'll make up what you've paid with the savings you can make in the large supermarkets in Cuitadella or Mahon. That's one of our reasons for having the car plus that bit of independence you have by being able to do your own thing. The roads are excellent and well sign posted and if you've driven in Greece you should find it really easy compared to their roads.

We are staying at the Galdana Gardens apartments which are located on the flat just across the bridge from the beach, spotted them last year and decided they should be a good choice...hope I've got it right! I think (not certain though) that the apartments you've booked are located up the hill so you may find you use the car just to pop down to the beach rather than have the walk back up the hill in the heat.

We always went to the Greek Islands or Cyprus before the children came along but Menorca is definately at the top of the list with my other favourites. The other big plus for me is only 2 hour flight

When it comes to car hire I would also say that it is worth having a car at least for a few days. Easy to drive and not far wherever you want to go. We go half board are not really in need of a car for shopping but have rented one a few times. Our children are mostly happy to stay at around the resort though.

We have rented from the resort but if you check prices and want it for more than three days it might be worth to hire one for the whole stay. We always book independently and it works really well apart from being much much cheaper for us. Have used Easy jet many times (to various destinations) and have never had any problems. There are taxis outside the airport just to your left you cannot miss them. However I think 35 Euros to Cala Galdana is a bit optimistic but I don't know how much more it would be. We paid 33 Euros to the airport ( a couple of Euros more from the airport) last September from Arenal which is closer to the airport.

We've been to Menorca a couple of times and have always had a hire car from the airport for the duration of our holiday. They're just so handy to pop out and about around the Island. The roads are a doddle and I always find it good to visit other resorts for future reference to see if they suit us. And of course, as mentioned, a car is good for getting your drinks etc from the big supermarkets.

we are going to Santo Tomas on 12th june and want to hire a car for a few days during our week's stay. which is the best and/or cheapest car hire company please? have read about Poppycars, don't know how they compare with others though.
our transfers to/from airport are included in our holiday package so won't need the car for this, just want to get around and see some parts of the island rather than rely on public transport.

We travel out to Menorca on the 24th June for 2 weeks and I'm finding it really difficult getting availability on small/medium car hire. I have spoken to holiday autos, europcar, hertz, easycar.com etc but none of these have availability.

Does anyone know of a car rental place I could contact? Are there issues hiring cars in Menorca this year?

Also I have just booked for July at menorcacarhire(dot)net and villacars.
I was also told that lots of the car hire places had downsized their fleets for this summer due to the euro.

I've got an e-mail back from Poppy Cars telling me no availability June 12th to June 26th.

Looks like the buses may resemble the Mumbai Express at the end of the month!

We have used http://www.cars-sanjaime.com for many years with no problems at all.

I have also heard the car rental firms have a lot less cars in their fleets than they normally do.

Carrentals.co.uk warns of hire car shortage

Carrentals.co.uk is warning of a shortage of hire cars this summer as suppliers run out of stock.

The car hire comparison site is urging British travellers to book early for the summer after a number of suppliers sold out in key locations over half term and Easter.

It claimed the problem was particularly bad in popular locations such as Alicante, Malaga, Palma and Faro.

Managing director Gareth Robinson said: "Demand in certain locations has exceeded supply this year. A number of car hire suppliers have held their stock levels because of the economic climate, but with many people still travelling some are being caught out."

Hello everyone ... just found this forum!

Anyway, I am coming to Menorca for a weeks holiday in 12 days (and counting) and have rented a villa in Son Parc. But I have left it until this weekend to organise car hire ... only to find that there seem to be none left! I have tried loads of websites, made about half a dozen calls yesterday to companies on the island ... all to no avail. I did get an email back from one this morning saying that they could sort me out, but I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of them, and if so, if they are reliable/reputable. They are called Rent a car S'Algar in Sant LLuis. From what I can see, they are based not too far from the airport, where I will need to pick the car up. Any help will be much appreciated.
