I forgot to say one thing I wouldn't do again is have a room share.

Absolutely! It is always worth the price of paying for a room on your own - even on a specialist holiday. I have two good friends who I go on holidays with and with whom I have shared a bedroom on occassions but even then, we only do it on short breaks or when staying in apartments. Sharing a room was OK in my hostelling days but those days are over and now I would never, ever contemplate doing it with someone I didn't know for exactly the reason that SandC states. You need somewhere to escape to unless you know that you really do enjoy the same things, tend to go to sleep at the same time and either don't snore or come equipped with earplugs!
