Hi Guys,
We head off to Ayia Napa on Wednesday (17th June 09) for 2 weeks staying at the Tsokkos Paradise Village. We have hired a car for 3 days and plan on doing the following day trips:
Drive to Troodos Mountains and take in the scenery and historical villages - my question is for those who have been here before. Can you advise of the names of the small historical village that would be worth a visit? Heading to Nicosia to do a bit of site seeing and take in more history. Then go for a trip to Famagusta to see no-man's-land. After that head head round the east coast taking in Pernera, Protaras, Cape Greko etc.
Can anyone advise on any other attractions to see during our trip? Any suggestions or detailed routes would be much appreciated... the other 11 days will be spent on the beach!
cheers

Nearby is the painted church of Nicholas Tis Stegis which is an ancient painted church.
Lefkara is the village which is famous for its lace and silver ware, but the locals will insist on you coming into their shops. The local men will stop you on the road with the pretext that something is wrong with your car, and then offer to take you to a house to see the lace. Just refuse as it is a hard sell tactic!
Just go off the beaten track into the forests and the mountains, and explore, it is good fun. If you get lost someone will always help!
In Nicosia, take your passports and walk through Ledra street to the Turkish side. It is different and a lot cheaper. You can get an old town guide and map from the Turkish side when you go through and there is a route to follow with all the places of interest. Warning - it is much hotter in Nicosia than on the coat or in the mountains.
Have a great time!

I love Kakopetria, but would not recommend Lefkara. This is the only place I have ever felt uncomfortable in Cyprus. The hard sell is unbelieveable, and we were actually locked into a shop and threatened which made me and my mum feel absolutely horrible - spoilt our day in the mountains somewhat, and I would never go back to that particular village.
Troodos mountain range has many walking trails, most with their unique characteristics. I would suggest to do at least 1 walk (about 6 km). I was recently on the top trail, which was all yellow (full of flowers in bloom). I would also recommend Kykkos monastery museum, the 10 UNESCO World Heritage painted churches, the venetian bridges, maybe a waterfall. Besides the old part of Kakopetria there are loads of small stone built pictureque villages in Troodos.
Hope the above helps.
Enjoy
