I'm off to Germany on Thursday, stopping initially near Wietzendorf (roughly half way beween Hannover & Hamburg). I love anything to do with WW2 and would love to visit any memorials/sites relating to the Dam Busters Raids.
I'm finding it very dificult to source much information and I only have a rough idea of the areas of interest. I appreciate this may be in the region of 120 miles or so from where I am stopping but it's the nearest I'm likely to get so I'm prepared for a long day out.
Can anyone help me with something specific; a couple of town names will do.
Thanks in advance
The Eder Dam (Ederstausee) is south west of Kassel near to the town/village of Waldeck. The Möhne (Möhnestausee) is about 45km south east of Dortmund a few kms north of Arnsberg and the Sorpestausee is a few kms southwest of Arnsberg.
How are you travelling? It may be easier to make it a stop en-route.
Travelling from Zeebrugge. Will have a look tonight, a slight diversion arriving at camp a early evening rather than mmid afternoon or a full day out and the expense of fuel that goes with it. Food for thought.
Did I see on another forum that you were heading down to the Black Forest area after your first stop. You could possibly have a break at one of the dams on your way.
You're right we are. Going to get the maps out later and have a look at the possibility of either on the way or between sites. Don't want to miss out but don't fancy such a long day out either.
On you way from Zeebrugge you could stop off at Rheinberg Military cemetery where many of the casualties from 617 squadron ended up. See http://www.cwgc.org/search/cemetery_details.aspx?cemetery=2002800&mode=1 for directions, not a huge detour.
Like the look of the cemetery but can't really do both. I've seen plenty of cemeteries having spent a few days in Ypres last year. The dams were on my hit list (so to speak) this year.
Hope you enjoy your trip. The weather is lovely at the moment but it's supposed to change over the weekend.
2 hours late docking in Zeebrugge on the way out as a gas tanker beat us into port (no other ships are allowed into port during this time) so my plans to stop on the way out went out of the window. It was 5.30 by the time we got to camp.
We must have picked the worst day weather wise to be moving down to the Black Forest, rain (torrential at times) for most of the journey. Not a chance of visiting anything on the way and I wouldn't have got to appreciate it anyway.
Will get there some day though and I did get to Arnhem last week whilst we were in Holland so some consolation.
