I always take a mixture of Sterling cash and YTL cash. For the YTL I try to get as many small notes as possible as they're good for tipping. Generally I find it easier to pay in the restaurants/bars in YTL and then for gifts/clothes with Sterling. But generally all places accept both.

I also take a credit card/debit card and have never had a problem getting cash out of a cash machine (except when there's a power cut!)

As i have said before on this thread my card was once swallowed up because there was a small split on it .No matter what i said to the bank they would give me any money ,even tho they got the card from the machine .If the wife did'nt have cash with her i was in deep trouble.I have never tried it again :yikes

We always take more than one card. We have a joint Nationwide account so we are going to take the two cards with that and we will also take both our debit cards from our other bank accounts too just in case anything was to happen.

I was actually wondering, as this is the first year with Nationwide whether we should contact the bank to tell them we are going in case they stop our cards. I did mention it at the branch but the girl just said "oh, that's ok" but didn't make a note of it. Should I phone somewhere?

I bank with Nationwide and asked the question, and no, they do not need to know where and when you travel. They just rely on chip and pin.

I always find the best exchange rates is always gained from the ATM wherever you are. Just come back from Prague, rate 28.5, but from ATM got 30.5 with no charges.

:D
