If you were willing to travel a little further I know my daughtr would recommend St Davids in Pembrokeshire. They camp there as often as possible, & its a very picturesque & unspoilt area.

I dont think Pembrokeshire is too far, I will have a look. My mum has recommended Combe Martin in Devon and we used to go to Dawlish as kids so am going to check these out too.
I havent been camping for a very long time (except glastonbury last year!) so have no idea what price we should expect to pay. My mum said when we were kids they used to pay about £4-5 a night for a pitch but I am guessing it will have gone up since then!!! I take it we will pay less for a campsite without entertainment and swimming pools. We are not fussed about either really as long as there are showers, toilets and a tap we will be fine!

I would definately recommend St Davids Pembrokshire for camping. The site is called Glan y mor (INVALID URL It's the only place we ever go now camping as it has everything you could want. There is also a pub on site (friendly staff), if it's a nice day there's decking out the front to sit outside. Your talking £12-£16 pound a night, we've only ever been for 2 night so they may do a better rate if you go for longer :que . It's the closest camp site to the town (5 min walk). Town consists of cafe's, quaint little shops, chippy, pubs. Best place for a pint and lovely locals is the Farmers arms. Lovely beer garden and gorgeous food at a reasonable price. If you fancy an upmarket place to eat one night I can highly recommend "The Cwtch", little pricey but well worth it. There's an activity centre called Twr y felin, they do sea kyaking, coasteering (fantastic) and boat trips to spot dolphins and orcha's e.t.c. Have a look at the camp site's website for more info. A few minutes walk from there is another campsite called "Caerfai", not sure if that's cheaper per night!

Pembrokeshire sounds lovely it is a definate maybe. My other half fancies Torquay, something to do with his footie team playing a friendly there in July I think! Any thoughts on Torquay? I have never been so have no idea what its like, there are a few campsites on the internet at reasonable prices but I am not sure whether they are within walking distance of any civilisation (i.e a pub!)

Really sorry but I can't help with Torquay :(

Torquay is a lovely resort. Nice & flat with plenty of pubs & restaurants, but I'd still opt for St Davids for traditional & picturesque.

Change of plan, we have decided to go for my birthday now- 1st weekend in August. So it doesnt have to be Torquay- in fact St davids is the favourite at the moment. However there are now 8 of us going (4 couples) we would consider a couple of static caravans if they are not extortionate prices but dont mind taking 4 tents if the savings are huge. We wouldnt want nightlife, just a nice pub/village within walking distance.

Caerfai bay that I mentioned have static caravans too! :)

Marlou, just had a look at Caerfai bay, they are fully booked :(
I am going to get final confirmation from my sister tonight and then book something before the weekend. We are going fri 24th- Sun 26th July. As well as being fully booked a lot of campsites have a 3 night minimum stay (we can only stay for 2) Still dont know where we are going, and am still open to suggestions if anyone can think of anywhere. All we require is:

A nice beach nearby (pref walking distance but not essential)
A pub/restaurant (Defo within walking distance!)
A campsite with showers/toilets and we would like somewhere with some space to have BBQ or maybe just sit around with a beer :sun2 . I have seen a few 'adults only' campsites around, they look quite appealing!
