For those of you who are flying out on the 5th August and are worried IF there is a strike , you will not be affected in leaving the country. Immigration ....soon to be Border Agency ( customs and immigration are combining) are only interested in people entering the country , they have no interest in whos leaving the UK unless you're dodgy or trying to leg it with bundles of money. The airline check-in staff are responsible for checking that you have a valid passport and that you are indeed the person who is flying, they then issue a boarding card which allows you to enter the Departure Lounge which is where the security screening is carried out , the security staff only require to see your boarding card to enter the bag/person screening zone , they have no interest in your passport either , you then go onto the departure gate where the airline staff check your passport and boarding card match up before scanning your boarding card and giving you back the stub so you know where you are sitting. So people don't worry you will get on your flight and be off on your holiday.
Airlines check your passports on way out.
Immigration check your passports when coming back into UK.
one thought I had was if incoming flights cant get passengers through immigration ....they may delay sending incoming flights.....and they are the planes that turn round and take departing passengers ....maybe wont affect morning flights on the 5th, but wonder if things will grind to a halt as the backlog of incoming passengers build up.....a lot of people come through immigration every hour....and there is only so much space in which to queu or wait....and people cant be left on the runway
cant see the airlines bearing the cost of sending empty planes for outbound passengers
I'm so glad that's a little clearer. Hubby thought that was the case but I had to find out from the 'experts' on here
Mum and dad went to prague the other week, i had to fill in passport information etc before they left. This is to make aware that the goverment know your leaving the country for a few days, weeks etc.
It's Advance Passenger Information (API) you are thinking of. It's only applicable to certain destinations at the moment and is being rolled out to several other throughout the year. If you need to provide the information, the airline / tour operator will let you know. Some take the details at check-in so you won't need to do anything.

Oh Ok.
So people don't worry you will get on your flight and be off on your holiday.
so tonight I can sleep soundly - yippee -don't mind a delay on the way back - especially if it means an extra night
Tweetie Pie, i'm sure the airlines will keep to their schedule, to be honest once they've landed the passengers its not really their problem. i would imagine that there might be a longer sweaty wait at passport control , but at least when you get through you won't have to wait as long for your bags silver lining in every cloud !
although i did like your idea of the information being for our government to make them aware that we are leaving the country for a while, no doubt an "inquiry" will be set up to find out where and why we are going
Apart from API being required by the countries who signed up to the Schengen Agreement, (we didn't)
It's not as far fetched as you might think it is, you're already being tracked by this government, they've been tracking your movements and compiling details on a database, and even though it is against EU law and human rights, they seemed determined to carry on with the "official" e-borders project.
The Home Office has already signed a contract with U.S. company Raytheon Systems to run the computer system and everyone will have 53 questions to answer before you're allowed to leave the country.

Just a reminder that this topic is about proposed strike action, there are discussions elsewhere about API requirements.
