HI ,Sunset Beach seems ok when speaking to people who are staying there,It is opposite the beach on opposite side of road on the highway from sennigambia to koloi/kotu junction,The best known in the area on the beach is the sennigambia hotel right in the middle of tourist areas (tourist area).
Kotu is not remote its a 30 dalasi taxi from sennigambia to kotu or a 15 minute stroll along the beach.
From torist areas Banjul is remote, I believe The Atlantic is remote,African village in BAKAU is close to all the areas but awkward 6 dalasi taxis rides , or one 125 dalasi taxi into heart of sennigambia, though it is more central to all the busy areas of Gambia, remember third world sorry developing countries 3star and european 3 star are not really comparable, , the Palma Rima hotel is 2 minute stroll from beach on main highway at kotu/kololi ,but ironically as the tourist numbers dropped last year they Increased restaurant and other charges to try and up the profits(crazy economics) if you go enjoy,
I used malarone but they had to be stopped they were spacing me out, I have to use larium ,one a week ,2 weeks before leaving and 2 weeks after returning, yellow fever and hepatitas injections are recommended, use your mossie net,and spray the room before you leave with BOP (50 dalasi a tin locally) kill the blasted mossies,
AS for BUMSTERS These are not sellers in Gambia, the BUMSTERS referred too are just That They want your cash for doing nothing they will prey on you hassle you shout at you ,swear at you if for any reason you refuse to give them your money(their logic being your in africa you can afford to fly eat, stay in hotels,THEREFORE AS GAMBIANS THEY DESERVE A SHARE OF YOUR HARD WORK, they will pester till you give it, those type DEAL with get rid of them.
The second type is the I AM YOUR BEST FRIEND GAMBIAN BUMSTER, I can take you to places to obtain goods cheap show you where to go, to eat which pubs are best.where cheapest goods are, so you can feed him buy him clothes cigarettes booze or lemonade all day all at inflated prices, with the promise the services are free, dont be fooled your are paying through the nose and will continue to do so for all of your holiday, to the stage he will say If you pay me I will stay away to day, till he has toked ,smoked and drank what you have given him,THEN HE IS BACK. like a leech
sellers are not bumsters they are working pay maybe half whats asked possibly a third and enjoy the haggle, thats my experience of maybe being in gambia for 1 year out of past 6 years,A place I love being in ,nice weather , lovely people, and can be peaceful and laid back.
cheers enjoy max ie Missed your food question ,around 4-10 pounds for a meal depending where (3 quid for a hamburger)
25 dalasi around 75p for bottle of beer spirits 1 pound or so lemonade 25 dalasi a bottle
litre of vodka gin etc 75-90 dalasi
cigs 1-6 pounds for 200 thats for smokers
good place in which to become a cancer ridden alcoholic on the cheap .
I neither smoke or drink unfortunately
you had direct access to the beach from the back of the hotel where you do get some beach boys but very tame as the hotel security is on the beach as well.
outside the front of the hotel is the village where there are a few other hotels and bars and resturants. directly opposite the hotel enterance is a guides station where official tourist guides if you want a freind will walk with you to see places etc..just give them a few dallassi at the end and if you want treat them to a drink or snack if your eating out.once you have one guide freind the others dont bother you at all. when he sees you he will come over to you as you go out the hotel if you dont want him that day just tell him you want to be alone and he wont pester you.
cant remmember exact prices but i think it was almost on a par with uk prices.
injections you have free from your doctors but you will have to pay for yellow fever at a proper yellow fever surgery. although this IS NOT compulsery for gambia.
mike
i stayed at the holiday beach in the kololi area. The senegambia strip is just out side the hotel we had one of the bunglows on the beach(no extra charge for the sea view),fantastic for wacthing the monkeys. The only bad point was the breckfast, your better off taken your own coffee or tea and just using there hot water
