Hi Everyone
We are looking at booking a holiday to Lesvos at the end of Sep/beginning of Oct. I really liked the look of Petra until I read a review somewhere from someone who said to keep driving through because it's like Blackpool. Would we be better off at Anaxos or will it be dead or closed down? We are a couple in early 50s. We like the beach/snorkelling, a bit of touring round in a hire-car. We like gyros and good greek food in a taverna at night then sitting in a bar and watching the world go by. We have enjoyed Parga, Stoupa, Skala Potamias in Thassos and also Paleohora and Kalives in Crete. We've been to other places which I call 'Greece for the English' such as Kalamaki (Zante) and Pefkos (Rhodes) where it's all Karaoke, English breakfast and Sky Sports. This is what we are trying to avoid.
Also does anyone know if the resorts will be pretty much closed down? I was thinking maybe Petra was more of an all-year-round place. I know the days will be shorter but hopefully the sea will still be warm and we can get a few hours sunbathing in.
we are also considering Samos as it's a bit further south so might be warmer for longer. Any resort recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Yiamass, Jean
It is usually true that the further South you go, the warmer the weather. Rhodes, Symi and Crete will generally be warmer than Thasos, for instance.
Lesvos is one of our favourite islands and we usually stay in Eftalou, an easy walk into Molyvos. We have just about covered the whole island and nowhere is spoilt by tourism. We did find places closing down in Sept. and we were told that when the Greeks finish their holidays there are not enough tourists. There is no comparison between Blackpool & Petra. You will need to rent a car to make the most of Lesvos, away from Molyvos, Petra & Anaxos public transport is sparse. Mytilene is well worth a visit and Plomari is not the industrial town to avoid that some guide books suggest, the ouzo factory tour is great, just allow some beach time before driving back to Petra!

Just to confirm what rdv said - we went same time as you propose, end Sept, start Oct and found a lot of things shut. Biggest bugbear was going to restaurants to be told most of the things on the menu were off. They really cut back at the end of the season. That said, we had a fabulous time.
I think because of the lack of dependence on tourism smaller resorts tend to shut down earlier, we've had experiences in restaurants where you are told what they have before being given a menu, this applied moreso in anaxos, last year we stayed in skala kalloni and erresou for the last two weeks of the season and had a brilliant quiet get away from the crowds holiday, lesvos is our favourite greek island by a long way, so much to see, so few tourists, so laid back it's horizontal.
