It's really interesting as I always seem to be on holiday with people from up North, I can never work out where Southerners go on holiday ? I love it, trying to work out all the different Northern accents, I would like to think I know Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle, but ironically I cant tell 'darn sarf' accents apart myself even though I am from Herts/Essex, people from Kent, Surrey etc all seem to sound the same as I do to me. (hope i haven't really insulted anyone from Kent and Surrey now , or anywhere else for that matter. )
Also if you come from down south and especially any of the Home Counties, its often just easier to say you are from London, which is a bit of a cop out. Years ago I had someone on holiday from Chelmsford tell me they were from London and I was but that's 20 miles further out than me ,so they were obviously using the same system.
