We always pay for a safe, I find that if you are staying in high* hotels they are usually free, but these days we go away 3 or 4 times a year so tend to stay in cheaper accommodation and have paid anything from 10euros to 30euros a week.

Never thought of haggling the price, I could just imagine the looks. :really
Wouldn't trust having a safe if they are located at reception though.

I always pay for a safe but only just realised in May,we have paid for 14 nights despite arriving in the middle of the first night when we had our money, passports and tickets with us.
I will now ask for 13 nights. :rofl

Weve been going to egypt every year for nearly 4years and weve stayed 4 diff places think we paid £15 max for 7-10 nights. went to turkey last year was 30euros for the week we went with friends so shared one!! why dont they make portable safes bring your own, alot cheaper :D

Just a word of warning. Because you have rented access to a safe does not mean that there is safety for your cash and personal belongings. These safes are usually built into walls or screwed to a wooden shelf inside an apartment. All the robber has to do is jemmy the safe from the wall or the shelf using an iron bar and pass the safe to the accomplice outside. This can be done quite quickly.

Then, best of luck with the insurance claim.

I always rent a safe, and keep money passport and other important stuff in, the bigger the better the more I put it. It's worth remembering that some insurance polices will not pay a travel claim for stolen money/credit cards etc, if these are not contained in a safe and left in a drawer etc.

Never thought of haggling for a price, I must admit I just pay it.

We take a portable safe with us on holiday - my Husband's wallet! I can't get into it, no matter how hard I try!

Lot less hassle with your claim if you have used a safe.

Thats a bummer Suzie . Tends to be the other way around here . It all stays in my purse locked in the safe and hubby cant have it . :rofl

I believe it's been years since we last had to pay for a safe . Admittidly we always seem to be A/I in either Turkey or Egypt but they always tend to be the type in your cupboard that you just operate yourselves with a number .

A always put away phones, keys , money and travel documents and my purse but tend to leave jewellery in a box on the dressing table . Not that theres anything there of much worth , just the likes of junky jewellery, a bit of silver and maybe a watch . My GHD's are probably worth more and they are slung on the floor . :)

Despite telling my eldest sons to use the safe in their own room for their wallets etc they never ever do and just leave them along with phones and maybe ipods in the drawer if they havnt taken them out with them .

fortunately we have never had any problems although this year a five pound note that had been knocking around in our room for a week suddenly disappeared . I know it wasnt much but it started to bother me and I spend ages looking for it every night . clearly it had been taken but maybe the cleaner thought we had left it as a tip . :que

having said all this I'm also aware that if we had anything stolen it would be very doubtful if travel insurance would pay out unless locked in a safe .

Once when we were on holiday, we forgot to pick up our Passports until it was time to check out!
Not a bad thing really though because at least it was their responsibilty if it was lost or stolen. Maybe not though?

I have heard about safes being ripped off the wall in some hotels - I won't say where because that will start a new thread but that must be a terrible experience to lose all your personal belongings.

On a lighter note - Apart from the obvious, the one item I would hate to lose are my tweezers!!!! Had them for years and can never replace them. Maybe I could start a Topic - 'what would you hate to lose on holiday' What do you think?
