Hi Kath,
Yes, we've had tea at Reids and it was a lovely experience. It was a few years ago now and the details have faded but the food was exactly as you would expect, probably on a 3-tier cake stand with perfectly made sandwiches, feather light scones and exquisitely decorated little cakes. The atmosphere was elegantly casual and I don't remember feeling as though we had to whisper! Service was excellent and unobtrusive - in short just as you are probably imagining it to be. You can wear a dress you would wear on board ship for dinner, but maybe not too strappy/bare or eveningy if you know what I mean. Just my feeling, which may be wrong, but if you are intending to wear something strappy take a shrug or cardi to pop round your shoulders if you feel uncomfortable when you get there. I think hubby probably wore a blazer and not a suit.
After tea we had a wander round the gardens which were beautiful.
You'll have a very nice afternoon I'm sure, provided you speak in dulcet tones
