Any recommendations on where to eat and where tohire a car from?
Thanks
I've never heard of this island. Where exactly is it please?
Leros is a very small island to the north of Kalymnos not far from the Turkish coast... sorry i cant help with information either
Thanks for that Wizzard - I thought perhaps it was a mis print of Lesbos
Leros was available as a package destination for several years from Sunvil. I think they dropped it this year. It was never popular because the Greeks sent mentally ill people here from all over the country. Sorry I cant answer the question but people we have met on our travels liked the island. Try Greeka.com for information.
Leros is an island in the Dodecanese chain. Laskarina used to send many visitors there until they ceased trading a few years ago. Looks beautiful (never visited it) however, I live in Greece and, unfortunately, Leros is now an island where a month or so ago, there were more "political refugees" than locals. There is/was a huge refugee camp there. Don't know if anything has changed. Many years ago it was indeed where the mental patients were sent.
Motoland in Panteli and Alinda hire cars, bikes, quads and pushbikes. If you hire a scooter, get a big wheeled, largish engined one. The traffic in Platanos square can be entertaining! Food wise - depends when you are going as the odd place was beginning to shut come 21 September. In Panteli I can recommend Pyrofani, Patimenos and for lunch, Tzoumas (Greek fish n chips - garfish and fried patates!). This doesn't mean that the other places aren't good - I just haven't made it to eat in them. In Alinda, we ate lunch at Lambris twice - excellent, apart from the kolokithokeftedes which were a bit overfried. We aim to get over there one evening NEXT year!!! I understand that Milos in Agia Marina is very good, but I've never been.
Kick back, open a bottle of retsina and watch the world go by! As for the immigrant detention centre, we saw no evidence of it - I believe that it is out at Partheni, we saw more evidence of the difficulties Greece is facing along it's eastern borders when on Patmos last year, whern the police station seemed to be being used a a "holding pen". Please don't let this put you off this island , any more than the existence of the psychiatric institutions put me off 20 years ago. Having visited Crete for many years (South side) which he adored, my other half tells me that Leros has just edged into his "my favourite island" 1st place!
Pleased to hear that all is well with Leros! It certainly looks lovely and, as per usual, we only hear the bad news on TV (e.g. the refugees). Let's hope it now gets visitors, but not too many, of course.
Definately not TOO many!
we were on Patmos some years ago and were told that the police station was in fact the local prison, it certainly had plenty of inmates. Not all bad though, they have great views of the harbour through the bars!
RDV - it was definately being used for "illegals" last year - it was all kids of about 12-15, they seemed fairly well cared for - they were asking for cigarettes through the gaps in the shutters rather than food!
