We are off to Goa shortly and I am interested in maybe purchasing an Indian Simcard whilst I am there. I was wondering how much these were and generally how cost effective they are when compared against using your own mobile or a payphone in Goa.
Could anybody give me an idea of how much these will cost me per call/per text etc.
if i remember right its 10rps per minute back to the uk.
If you call home only ocassionaly then payphone is best as the cost of purchasing the sim and top ups plus what credit you may leave on the phone which will expire is not very cost effective.
However if you call and text a lot the sim is best.
Plus one bonus for the sim is it is very convenient.Use anywhere, anytime.
As they say in Thailand.Up to you.

Used it for 2 weeks, not lots of calls but enough to satisfy necessities, came home with some credit left on it, total cost was around £10.
Main saving was on not having to queue for payphones at busy times.
I'd avoid the "Idea" network - I've had problems both times I've used them. Vodaphone and Airtel are fine.
You can buy a sim for a few rupees and put a couple of hundred rupees on it. Calls to the UK are about 6rps a minute, I think. You'll need copies of your passort ID page, visa and a photo.
