Not been able to find confirmation of this anywhere Pauline, we will have to wait until FV returns to UK to find the source of his info.

Hi lal,

The definitive source of information about Customs allowances is the HMRC website - both Bulgaria and Romania are now shown as 'normal' members of the EU, with the previously applicable importation restriction of 200 cigarettes (which had been granted by EU Customs legislation) having been withdrawn on 31st December 2009.

The reported price increases of cigarettes in Bulgaria (currently around 30%, from memory) will continue until the Excise duty charged in Bulgaria meets or exceeds the minimum levels set by the EU.

Hi Baldur.

just caught your reply to the post seen the mentioned post on the other forum checked for truth of it only thing I have found is a mention of the transitional allowances running out on Dec 31st 2009 so seems that we are now getting Bulgaria classified as a real part of Europe and not just an afterthought, also please enjoy another good year and hope to see you continuing to post here . :tup

Hi Mondeo.

Честита Нова Година 2010г! (Chestita Nova Godina!/Happy New Year!).

.....seems that we are now getting Bulgaria classified as a real part of Europe and not just an afterthought

There are obviously still some reservations about Bulgaria & Romania, as although most potential EU safeguard clauses expired on 31st December, there will still be ongoing monitoring of the areas of Justice & Home Affairs in both member states.

The EU regulations relating to the personal importation of cigarettes can be seen HERE under "Tobacco - special rules", section "b) For travellers returning from one of the Member States that joined the EU on 1 January 2007".

Best wishes,

Those who intend to make trips to non-EU countries as part of their holiday in Bulgaria (e.g. the widely-available coach trips to Turkey/Istanbul), should be aware, so they are not caught out on their return journey, of the new limits for the personal import of tobacco products imposed by the Agentsiya Mitnitsi (Bulgarian Customs Agency) on those passing through land, sea & river borders between Bulgaria and neighbouring non-EU countries (Turkey, Macedonia & Serbia):

40 cigarettes
OR
10 cigars
OR
20 cigarillos
OR
50g smoking tobacco

More details can be found in this Novinite article.
