Hi Again,
Well last week spent all my time finding a resort in Turkey and a hotel, managed that with all your help but now I have been reading reviews about costs of food and drink and I was always under the impression that Turkey was alot cheaper than here but thats not what I'm reading. We usually visit America for our hols but after horrendous long flights last November we have decided to have a nice relaxing beach holiday where we actually come home feeling like we have been away. Hopefully someone will read this who has been to Turkey recently and can give us some advice as now i'm faffing around thinking of other non euro countries where we wont spend a fortune or even AI (at this rate I'll get nothing booked) At the moment I have Turkey, Egypt,Tunisia and Croatia all going round my head and Its really getting me down (how stressful is all this holiday lark!!)
Here is a brief discription of what we like and what we don't like:
We are a couple in our mid 40's, hate crowds and gangs of clubbers(sorry, i know i was young once!) Love beautiful scenery and gorgeous soft sandy beaches and sea you can swim in. We will try any board ie B&B, AI, Self Catering. Love to try all kinds of food and don't want to eat british food on holiday, restaurants that the locals use and little waterside bars. Like a few drinks throughout the day and would like to visit surrounding areas on day trips etc. Love markets and meeting locals who are friendly. Must be nice and hot. We were originally looking at September but now are going early July. Would like all this but not spend an absolute fortune once we are there.
I will keep my fingers crossed that someone who has visited all these non euro places can help me or if you have another non euro country to throw into the mix then please do. If you have any lovely places that you would rather keep to yourself I promise I won't tell anyone else, lol we had originally decided on Dalyan on a B&B basis at the Asur, maybe I should just go with my first instinct? Oh nearly forgot, another problem was hubby could see no mention of a safety deposit/safe at this hotel and was worried about that(he's in the forces. lol) perhaps someone can help us with that as the hotel hasn't replied to my email.
Sorry to write so much but at this rate my only holiday will be at the Priory!!(except thats too expensive too!)
Thanks Jill and Dave x
This year there are only the two of going to Turkey ,2 weeks,AI,in August,4* for just over £1700,we can afford to eat out whenever we want but know that we don't have to carry cash down to the pool for soft drinks,we can also have drinks in the evening if we decide to eat in the hotel.Hope you get sorted soon,T.
I don't know how Dalyan compares to other resorts as I haven't visited for many years but I'm sure someone can tell you.
I usually go to the Bodrum Peninsula and the prices between resorts varies a good deal. Somewhere like Gumebt or Bitez has some very reasonably priced restaurants if you look around but others that put the prices up for tourists, whereas if you go to somewhere like Ortakent the majority of visitors are Turkish and so you will find it much cheaper to eat out, the prices there are very good as most of the restaurants cater for Turkish guests rather than Western ones. Ortakent also has a beautiful sandy beach, waterside bars and is close to Bodrum for the weekly market and where you can easily travel around the Penisula.
There are plenty of resorts like that around and I'm sure someone can recommend somewhere in another area if you don't fancy Bodrum.
I hope this helps

I almost always holiday in Datca, we had 8 weeks there last year. I have written about it here before so just search Datca. It is a Turkish holiday harbour town and so does not really cater so much for europeans.
We have considered Egypt for a beach holiday before, but just not keen on the fact that most of the beach resorts are purpose built and we have the impression you could be anywhere in the world.
Generally the trips you can go on in Turkey are fantastic value for money between £12 to £15 a day on a barbeque boat trip! The Turkish are also excellent hosts and know how to look after you!
As i've told others on here, Turkey is as cheap or expensive as you want it to be for eating out. Ask in your hotel for non-touristy restaurants. I have looked at Goldtrail Holidays departing around 10th July, for two weeks in 2/3 star, because I don't know what part of the country you are in, here are some prices(per person):- Gatwick to Bodrum area £303, to Dalaman area £297. Birmingham to both areas £307. Manchester to Bodrum £327, to Dalaman £317. Olu Deniz, Hisaronu/Ovacik are the resorts I would recommend to you. Fethiye is close by with its fantastic weekly market. Saklikent Gorge is a dolmus ride away. There are boat trips. Ephesus is a two day trip if you want archaeology(check out local tour operators, they are cheaper than your holiday firm.
Plus side its near Dalaman airport and you dont have the long journey that you do have with other resorts.
The scenery is lovely and it still has a Turkish feel that a lot of the other resorts have lost.
There are lots of lovely restaurants along the river with view looking over the Rock tombs.
I personally wouldnt travel to the beach everyday as I find the boat boring after a while, but the beach is lovely. You can get the bus which doesnt take so long.
We always hire a boat just for the two of us it costs about £40/£50 and includes lunch I would highly recommend it.
Not sure about the Asur having safety deposit boxes but I would be very surprised if they didnt. Not been in a hotel or apartment yet in Turkey that didnt have them.
Unless the Asur is open all year round you might have to wait for a reply to your email.
Have a lovely holiday what ever you decide
Lynn
