KJF makes a very valid point that the people most of us come in contact with are in actual fact not Goans, but are from out of state, mainly Karnataka, and are themselves held in fairly low esteem by Goans. The Goan Tourist Miister has made it perfectley plain his thoughts on "Employment Doles" as he is perfectley in his right to do. We, in the main feel he has got it wrong, time will tell.
Tourism is of coure, of great importance to the Goan economy, however the season is short, a considerable ammount of the revenue goes out of state, and the iron ore industry, for example also plays a large part in the economy of the state.
I have a feeling that the vast majority of Goans who are not directly involved in the tourism business, are not in the least concerned by the view of this minister. Indeed the Goans I have discussed tourism with find many aspects, such as the shacks, which we all love, as something which they disaprove of, and would be only too happy to do without. Regardless how this all pans out in as far as the numbers next season, the overall future of tourism in Goa is undoubtably with the Indian market which grows apace each year, and the demise of the "Employment Doles" will not cause the Minister of Tourism to lose any sleep

flying with thomsons on the 15th and have got my re-entry stamp as i visited christmas time but this morning received a letter from thomsons saying that they have been informed by the high commission re new visa restrictions.
To be honest, were it not for these internet forums, who would even know?
Presume you have read this thread

Should change this topic to
"New Regulations Will Bring In Determined Tourists" (only)
Never mind the tour operators and airlines warning folk about the new 2 month rule, IMO the VFS people should write to everyone who they have issued current VISA's to and inform them of a change in the rules.
think theres some confusion i have my re-entry stamp sorted
How did you manage that Ron ?
visited the commission in london with my holiday details, form, photo etc,had a bit of a chat and got a phone call to get my passport about 3 days later
You make it sound so easy Ron, presume getting there from Watford is a lot easier than lots of other peoples homes in the UK !
i actually came down from liverpool.
That's no easy route, couldn't you have gone to Birmingham as a slightly better alternative ?
its a very long story, but its all sorted now

Loved that - good one Dave
If you weren't in Wales I'd say it was the British Bulldog spirit that makes us do it Dave (but then I do have family in Tredegar and Ebbw Vale so maybe you can let me have that little joke )

Is Wales not in Britain Fizz?
Shhhhhhhh ! She's from Devon you know !!!!!!!
Thanks
Advice needed
We are now playing a very hard and frustrating waiting game with the Consulate in Birmingham. After gathering information and advice from fellow HT members (thank you) I photo copied all doc/ tickets/forms/letter/photo's/money etc and my hubby set off from Leeds 5am Wed 27th Jan........he was 1st in the que for re-entry, handed all the paperwork over, lady staple all together including our SDE she informed him that they would be processed on Monday and posted out Tues/Wed...........still we are waiting I have tried constantly to get through to Birmingham and no-one every answers. I did acutally ring the passport consulate number ....the 4.30-5.30 telephone number to be told by a lady that i was on wrong number yes i am aware but please help me, she then gave me a telephone number of a guy that i needed to speak to ........thanks i said, when is he in the office.......he's here now i can hear him talk. I thanked her and rang the number for 45 minutes (til 5.30 finish) you guess he never answered Wednesday or Thursday.
I keep checking the SDE number on the royal mail website and as yet it has been processed, we are now at a loss as to what we can do........no-one will answer or help if we get through............does anyone have any idea's other than having to drive back to Birmingham (more *&%$ expense).......I know its been said 1000's of times but why oh why do they make things sooooooo difficult.........its driving me to drink
We fly back on 22nd Feb and if they dont give us re-entry permission thou god know why they wouldnt we want our passports back.
Thanks in advance
Jules
When I go to Wales I get ribbed mercilessly by my friends son for being "English" - it's worse when the rugby is on TV (looking forward to the 6 nations)
Sorry off topic - I am still a genuine tourist of Goa (and Wales too)

Quite interesting
Really?
I wonder what the reason for that could be?
Many other countries have come up with schemes, tour packages and other attractive incentives to woo foreign tourists.
And what has India done to compete with therse countries to retain exisisting tourists and gain new ones?
Made it damn harder than ever to get in!
They state a 35,000 decline in foreign tourists coming in by charter from 2008 to 2009, although the increase in people travelling scheduled may account for some of that.
What will be REALLY interesting is the number of foreign tourists visiting in 2010.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/nov/18/douglasalexander-development
Douglas Alexander says the money will help alleviate poverty in a country where 828 million people live on less than $2 a day
It's a crazy world when India funds its own space programme but can't feed its people and Britain is so deep in debt the zeros won't fit on the page, but we feed the poor that India ignores.
Given that sort of logic, perhaps the Tourism Minister isn't quite so bonkers after all!!
Anyway, we fly on Wednesday so I'll just go down the dole and get my spending money!
