hi everybody. got back late last night and thought i would just give a quick report. went out on monarch 7,00pm flight. every thing was fine - good seats(where we requested, even though we hadn't pre-booked) had plenty of room, we are on the short side but our neighbours, who were a lot taller were more than happy with the legroom. staff very pleasant,in-flight meals good,2 drinks runs and they were quite happy for you to request more drinks after this. 2 new films and some other programmes for entertainment.flight actually arrived 20 mins early.so if you've booked with monarch and have read all the bad reviews - dont worry they're not that bad!
stayed at the nazri resort in baga. it is a lovely hotel - the best we have stayed in yet. good position, opposite east meets west. didn't do anything unusal - just a chill out holiday really,as we have done most of the usual trips. went to fransiscos,jo louie, jolly jacks, tom's and sunset beach shacks - all very good. the best though was called cliffs shack. you have to cross over the baga river by silver sands and then walk past sunset beach and climb over the rocks but it is well worth it. there are NO beach sellers or massage girls, completely peaceful. the food and drinks were good, some nice music played not too loudly and the beach there is really clean.it is a sort of cove so you dont get the huge waves and can actually swim. the lads on the shack are really friendly but also leave you alone - if you know what i mean! left our towels there at night and they would put them on the beds for us next day. next year the owner is hoping to build some huts behind the shack which should be lovely. they also have really clean, flushing toilets.
went to the oriental - ok,not very good service and the meal was average. a bit disappointed as our friends who we met there had been three times the previous week and had thought it was much better, so just luck of the drawer i suppose. went to bernards place- very nice and kim fa - very mediocre! suprisingly some of our best meals were actually in the hotel - had a fabulous king prawn red thai curry and hyderabad chicken.also when we fancied 'plain' , chicken in white wine with jacket potatoes. it was really well priced and their wine was not too over priced. went to floyds, flambes and perola do mar in candolim and the waiters remembered us from 2 years ago and the food was just as good. the best restaurant though was the o pescodor in baga, lovely atmosphere, a bit 'up market' and lovely food. we had the hot and sour chicken soup, spicy crab soup, pepper fried king prawns, mixed hakka noodles, king prawn goan curry, and chicken sagg, plus a couple of continental meals as well. their drinks were also really icy cold. sorry, this is starting to read like a menu, you might notice that one of my favourite things about goa is the food! bought some of the usual tat - cant resist it. my husband just lets me get on with it now.
came across a new scam, though others may already know of it. walking back from the beach on a quiet bit of road came across a small boy with his big basket of peanuts, absolutely bawling his eyes out, holding his face. whats the matter? we ask."three men beat me and stole all my money".followed by even louder wailing. we said we must take him to the police at which he beat a hasty retreat.unsympathetic you might think, but our friends who were staying in calangute had already told us that this had happended to them days before.
we never went last year and wondered if we would notice much change. we didn't. its still hectic and noisy and rubbish strewn.there are too many russians, imo. its also hot, sunny, friendly, quirky, has the best food and drink, and imo, still offers the best value for money. there is always something to see or something going on. yes there are too many taxi drivers wanting to take you 200 yards but we just dont take any notice.
my husband had it right when we were sat at cliffs shack watching the sun go down with an ice cold g&t and said "this is as good as it gets"
thats about it really - a bit boring i know, but just wanted to say - i still love goa!!
GREAT an nice positive post
It sounds fab, just my kind of holiday
Any tips re the hotel, or are you writing a review on here for it?
Not boring at all BB, just sort of sums up what I will be doing next week (not rubbing it in that you're back and I am still to go)
As a fellow foodie I was disappointed to hear you had a poor meal at the Oriental as I have recommended it several times and ate there frequently without a single poor meal.
Couldn't agree more about Kim Faa, mediocre and overpriced for what we ate on the one occasion we went IMO.
Cliff's Shack is somewhere else I have recommended several times too as the perfect get away from Baga beach. I hope too many people don't take us up on it though as it will be so crowded on that little beach !!!
Lovely report. We too are off to the Nazri next month. Liked the look of Cliffs Shack but wondered whether it would be easy to climb back over them rocks after a few drinks when the sun had gone down and it was getting dark. Wouldn't want to take a tumble!!
I,m sure we stopped there last year for a drink,we were trying to see if we could walk to Anjuna, but i wasn't feeling great&thats as far as we got but i would imagine it would be abit hairy walking back.
Great report,we go just over 2weeks & such a positive reports really gets us in the mood
That was a lovely read Bushbaby!
Your report really cheered me up, I was beginning to think I was the only one, who still enjoyed my trips to Goa.
I think I will try O'Pescadors, I have been past many times but never got around to trying it.
Ive always loved O'Pescador and visited once sometimes twice each holiday. However, the past 2 holidays ive not been, I think its gone downhill a bit (just my opinion of course ) Must admit it is a nice setting inside the restaurant.
My meal? We also noticed that a "we didn't have this" KF had been added to t'bill. Good thing we ALWAYS check
Last season, service and food took a steeeeeep dive!! No apologies; that's what WE found.
We have given O'Pescador a miss the last 2 years as well. Used to love the food here but last time we went we didn't enjoy it at all, not just the food, the atmosphere had changed too. May give it another go next time, maybe we got them on a bad day.
we had never been to o pescador before so have nothing to compare with but we did enjoy all our meals there (4). however there is one waiter who is very pushy with the wine list. we are quite happy with the madera at 550r but he tried his hardest to get us to have banyon tree at 1100r,saying that its much better, even though he had already told us that he never drinks alcohol !.we had already tried it at our hotel, only 750r and didnt actually like it very much. we did also notice another couple querie their bill about added kingfishers, but our bill was always correct, and i always check it. i suppose its like everywhere, you can get an off day and be unlucky, as i think we were at the oriental.
hi moles kent. the hotel is really good. it has a lovely pool and grounds overlooking countryside. we were in a standard room and it was fine, very new and bright, really good shower room with a powerful hairdryer. they have huge comfortable beds with four big fat pillows, flat screen tv and good balcony.the mini bar is really well priced - eg kingfisher 40r,bacardie breezer 60r.water 20r. we were on the 4th floor and they have 2 lifts. i would say the only let down is the breakfast. its cereal, toast, juice and tea/coffee plus some indian dishes, but if you want omelette, fried or scrambled eggs you have to pay 70r. its the first time i have come across this as we have always stayed in 3 star hotels and these have always been included. they also ran out of butter and marmalade in the second week, and i hate margarine! but its not a big problem as we are quite happy to have a late breakfast at a shack.the food in the restaurant is really good though. all the staff without exception were really helpful. there is a poolside bar and a lobby bar that is open as long as someone wants to drink there. would definately return there if we could get a good deal again but i bet they put the prices up next season! if you need to know anything else let me know. have a great time - i wish we were still there!!
