hi all
is there any up to date news on the rebuilding of long beach, haven't booked hols yet, still want to go back to marmaris, but not to a bomb site .
regards marnie
Does anybody know what the situation is right now with how Marmaris beachfront looks, has re-building started yet? or IS re-building starting at all?? I am going at the end of July so hopefully things will look better than the demolition site I have seen on YouTube
Thanks
Jackie
hi.... i spoke to my friend in marmaris today and obviously always ask what the progress is. He told me that it is just the same. Nothing is being built yet. Aparently, he says it's for the courts to decide what will happen now and the decision date is 15th march. But as no building works can be done after 1st April, it's highly unlikely that anything will be rebuilt for this season. I haven't had much luck with my tour operator. They've given me option to cancel, but I don't want to do that. Prices are much steeper now than they were when i booked it and i'll be hard pushed to find anything that suits. They might've left a great big gaping hole on long beach but they can't take away the sunshine
While browsing on line yesterday I came across video footage of the demolition at Long Beach. Wish I had saved the site to my favourites as I don't remember what it was but what I saw was horrendous. Worse than any building site. Piles of rubble resembling a bomb site. I am going to Marmaris with my friend in May. She has never been to Turkey before and I have went on about how pleasant and entertaining it is along the front in the evening. Don't know what she will think now. By the way we are not from the young generation but still enjoy meals, music and people watching along this area. Not everyone who goes along is a drunken lager lout. Hopefully it will only get better as it could not possibly get any worse.

you tube, its not pretty! x
i really feel very sorry for anyone who has booked marmaris for this summer, especially first timers as longbeach is in such a mess, it really gives a wrong impression of marmaris, this will be the first time in sixteen years i havent been to marmaris.
tour operators should have known what was happening, and explained the situation in there descriptions of marmaris, they must take some responsibility for selling holidays to what looks like a bomb site.
from what i have been reading tour operators are not willing to help with alternative holidays, unless you pay a lot more, why can you not keep the same flights, at the price they were origionally booked at and just have an option to select another resort, instead of being offered a cancellation and re book at todays prices.
It makes me very sad to see a place i love in such a mess, over the years i have met some lovely people in marmaris, and a lot of them have a hard time making a living, marmaris depends on its tourism, and i am afraid they are in for a tough time this year.
one thing is sure, once the place is sorted i will certainly be back.

I've read today that all the bars are being rebuilt in time for start of season, here is the article
after seeing the video on youtube, and the fact that all building work stops at the beginning of the season,
(unless of course they have hired the extreme makeover home edition team)
it will be interesting to read the reviews once the season has started.

Just read on another forum today a post from somebody who lives in Marmaris that they have started putting in foundations on the front,Captains bar is to be built and some other new places,so maybe all is not lost!!Lets face it,they can be built in no time, not like our buildings, its amazing what they can build in a few weeks.
Hello everyone, I have just heard from my friend. He says that it is true....Marmaris did win and long beach will rebuild. I asked if building work had started and he said that Captains Bar is already starting work. So all is not lost. :hyper. Will post as I get more info
marmaris summer was first to report the destruction so doubt it would be to win tourists back! i am so happy! marmaris here we come!
Thanks Peacelilli, Crispy..... I feel a whole lot better now on hearing the great news, looking forward to Marmaris even more now
As far Im aware most bars on beachfront will rebuild except bar x who are moving to bar street. This is what bar x staff have been told so far, they are worried about the music situation so opted for bar street where a 4 am license is no problem
We were considering going to Icmeler in June but have heard that a lot of bars are being demolished. This is my first visit Turkey but my husband's second who went by himself for stress break about two years ago, on that occasion he went Altinkum. I would not like to go to Icmeler to find its like a demolition site as it would be a disappointment for me for a first visit to Turkey. If it does feel thats it all rubble we may go to Altinkum. We are mature people who do like bars and music in the evening.
Is there anyone been recently, and is it as bad as it sounds?
Thanks in advance

Icmeler is a lovely resort. Despite the posts about certain places being demolished you can bet your boots the place will look great come the start of the season. As far as I can make out only certain establishments were due to be removed and will not have a great impact on a lovely resort.

Wilson is right - Icmeler is lovely and will be just as lovely and welcoming this season. Yes, some places have been demolished, or partly demolished, but some are already being rebuilt and there are so many great places to eat out and drink that you will be spoiled for choice. it certainly won't resemble anything like a building site. My husband and I are going back again at the end of May and personally, I can't wait to see the changes which have taken place.
Any amount of demolition wouldnt stop us from going to marmaris, there are plenty of other bars etc there to visit they need the money/tourism lets keep it coming in and not desert them,i think most of turkey is changing but where else can you get the hospitality/people/weather etc fromroll on july
they are worried, they do know ,
anybody going to turkey for the first time are in for a shock.
