after thinking we would try and do seperate flights and hotel we found a bargin B&B for 2 weeks start of july for the Tara hotel in skala. To say I am excited would be an understatement!
Any tips for must do trips- we are planning to hire a car (locally) so any car hire firms in Skala you can suggest. What other islands can you visit from here and which would be best?
We are travelling with our 4 year old so any tips on best family beaches etc would be great. We went to Rhodes and Symi last summer and fell in love with the Greek islands, I cannot imagine a summer holiday in Europe anywhere else.
Thanks for any tips you can give
On our last visit to Kefalonia we took our hire car over to Zante for the day. We got to see the blue caves and the shipwreck at Smugglers Bay but really needed more time to see the south of the island, an overnight stay would have been a good idea.
I didn't even think of doing that, what a great idea. Do you know roughly how much that would cost and is it easy to arrange?
Very easy to arrange, we just turned up at the tiny port. Crossing took about an hour and the ferry was almost empty. It goes from Pessada just twice daily, I think it was about 7.45am and 5pm. Cant remember the cost but Greek ferries are usually cheap.
Skala is wonderful
Have a look at my post on page 2 called Cephalonia report ( tried to post a link but failed !)

The also do a trip to Ithaca for the same price and you get to spend a couple of hours in the capital Vathi before sailing on to Kioni where you spend another couple of hours. Kioni is a gorgeous little village and if you go, don't forget your camera.........it's a must here! You will stop off for a swim on the return trip. Both trips are recommended.
Ferries to Lefkas are available from Fiscardo on the north of the island but because of the time spent travelling up from Skala (it is a good one and a hald to two hour drive), an overnight stay on Lefkas or in Fiscardo on your return would probably be advisable.
Enjoy!

thanks so much everyone for taking the time to reply. We are so excited, I have wanted to visit Kefalonia for years and when booking Rhodes last year we came close to going here instead! You have all given me much food for thought. Having read the reviews on Tara Beach hotel it seems that it is very basic but thats fine for us, am looking forward to it so much.
Rachael you will love Kefalonia. I really envy you because you have got everything to discover; it's a beautiful island. Nothing can prepare you for the gorgeous scenery. Some nice resorts we liked are: Aghia Efimia, Assos (the most beautiful place ever) Sami, Poros, and also the square in Argostoli on an evening. Have a great time.
