I would also like to know.We have been on the train twice,as part of a three day safari in the past and really enjoyed it,would love to go on it again,I notice that they dont include it in the safaris anymore.
I don't know about the Lizard Train but you could try Saphir Voyages. Ring them on 00216 72 240168. I've used them for the Sahara trip and they were excellent.
Hi, what is the Lizard Train??? Keen not to miss anything when I visit Tunisia for the very first time in July. (Staying at Sahara Beach)
It's actually called the Red Lizard Train and 'google' has some info on it.
Take a look at the Tunisian Tourist website for some info
Thanks for the help. We really need a tour operator as it is a long way to go and prefer to go on an organised trip as we will probably need to make it at least a 2 day trip to get the most from it, will have a look around when we get there, I am sure we will find someone who does it.
I've done the normal overnight Sahara excursion and it was great.
However I've been reading about the "Red Lizard Train" on the internet - and I like trains and want to go ride this one.
I'll be staying in Port el Kantaoui for two weeks in May but I know this is a fair distance away.
Has anyone any suggestions about how I might get to go ride this train?
No replies at all on HT, or TA or VT, I'm afraid.
Lots of googling and poking around the internet has only come up with one option
- an excursion run by a company called "ISANGO" which I've never heard of before,
they offer the usual overnight sahara trip and include the Red Lizard ride - the cost is £128.
Does anyone know of any other way, or does anyone have any experience with ISANGO please?
I've never heard of ISANGO, neither have I been on the Red Lizard Train, but a few years ago I did the 2 day dessert trip with Saphir Voyages which I booked on the phone from my hotel in Sousse and thoroughly enjoyed it. The number I phoned them on was 00 216 72 240 168 but I've just tracked down their website which, though in French, you can translate with Google and might be of interest to you.
I think it will have to be done as part of an overnight trip as it is about 5hrs from PEK to Gafsa, your other option is to take a louage from Sousse to Gafsa and book a hotel there overnight and then get a louage back to Sousse the following day.
We were going to do it last year through our tour operator Thomas Cook, it was one of the excursions on offer. Unfortunately we couldn't do the trip as it was cancelled due to flooding. If you are staying in or around any hotels with Thomas Cook reps installed I am sure they would be able to arrange it for you. Our hotel reception were also quite helpful with this too. We were staying in Sousse.
