I found New York was rather expensive in November last year, not sure if it was because we went the weekend before thanksgiving.

Have you tried Priceline or Hotwire? If you need any more info on those just ask - a few of us on this forum (JWhiting at least I think) have used them, we will all be happy to help if we can!

NY has always been very expensive for hotels. It's a highly popular destination and they know that people will pay the money.
Vegas by comparison is dirt cheap, because Vegas wants you there to gamble, they will let you have a room for next to nothing

Seriously Pebbles? When we went previously we got Holiday Inn Midtown for $139 one year and then the next year we did priceline (about £70 I think). We couldn't get anything under £200 per night (3 star) places like the New Yorker etc, that don't really look anything remotely like a £200 room! In the end we stayed at the Westin in Jersey City for about £60 per night, and ended up really liking it! Jersey City was actually surprisingly nice!

I'm just quoting what I read elsewhere regarding the prices. I'd post a link or reference it in some way, but I can't find it at the moment.

It's just you - it's a country of close to 300 million people where staying in hotels is an everyday occurence, they also have a massive international tourist trade, The US is also the home of competition and the free market - if hotels routeinely charge the figures you quoted, the free market would quickly sort them out.

Just depends how you want to go about your purchasing , my wife has just had a 40K mile service on her VW Beetle cabrio for £150 - from an independent specialist - her father has had the same job done on his Passat for £390 from a VW main dealer. Caveat Emptor.

Considering staying in hotels is an everyday occurance and the amount of hotels there are and such a big population along with the tourist industry i would have thought the hotel market would be a lot more competetive price wise. Also the majority of hotels appear to be bed only which underlines how expensive they are, compared to breakfast, evening meal, and all inclusive deals to be found throuhout europe vegas apart the deals really are ott for whats on offer. Ive found a bed and breakfast in boston for £415.00 for seven nights, the best ive found so far, i can find that here for example for £175.00 or cheaper.

Sorry Pebbles, wasn't doubting what you said, just thought the rates were pretty high, so if that was the cheapest time then I'd hate to see the more expensive times :( .

That said, not often we go to New York, and usually only for a few nights - and also have now discovered Jersey City where I'd happily stay again.

No worries Lesley. I think that NY is hideously expensive myself.

Not in New York. In fact the Nov/Dec period in New York is the busiest time.
