hi all,

going to the rio in a couple of weeks, but having read some reviews, im having second thoughts, with all the comments about muggings, pickpockets, and not to walk along the "yellow brick road at night".

does anyone know of a way to avoid walking the yellow brick road, when making our way back to the hotel at night?

any information would be appreciated, and also the best bars (cheap ones) and best cabarets act to see.

many thanks

The Yellow Brick road is not that bad in my opinion. You can go along Calle Jaen and down either Avenida Europa or Avenida de Cuenca if you prefer to walk along roads that have cars going by. If you look fearful and/or vulnerable or are falling down drunk, then you will be more likely to be a target.

If you turn left out of the hotel, then right on Calle Jaen, you will come to three cheap bars, BB's, Tigger's and Cheap and Cheerful. All have €1 pints and offers on local spirits.

Can't help with the cabaret bars. We don't tend to go in them much.

Abby there are many cheap bars to visit in Benidorm 1€ a pint for example...just look around for special offers, you'll see them everywhere. Cabaret Bars are dearer in price of course, because your not paying an admission fee, and the artists need paying from something!

Not knowing what your tastes are, heres a few really good acts to keep you going.

DebnHer - Fantastic Female Duo, on at many venues including The Tropical, Morgans Tavern, Buddies, Sinatras,White Horse.
Neil Ross - Great Singer, best in Beni in my opinion, he's on at The Town every night at 9pm
Rikki Stevens - Comedian, also on at The Town at 11pm
Dave Keegan - Great Elvis show again at The Town 12 pm.
One Vision (Queen Musical Tribute) - Morgans Tavern and UK Bar
Smart Move - Superb Male Duo on at Stardust
Boyzone Tribute - These are a new show in town, on at Stardust and Rachels Bar
Mike Curtis - Comedian , at The Zodiac and Sandras
Shoewaddywaddy - at Western Saloon and Rock and Roll House
DAnny Downing - Comedian - at Rockerfellas
Gary George - comedian at Sandras and Zodiac
Moff (Freddie Mercury) - Talk of the Coast

Theres quite a few others such as Black Eyed Peas, Girls Aloud,Lady Gaga, Albi Senior...too many to mention them all...but some ideas for you there

Best Regards - Taggy

PS...Rich Bitch drag show in Old Town a great night out too!

It was a sensible reply, I was looking to buy your holiday from you if you were too worried about going, I was doing you a favour, you have more to worry about in whatever town you're from than you ever have in Benidorm.

If I remember correctly, Abby did return a couple of months ago to post some info but we were having technical problems at the time due to server upgrade work. Some feedback (dated 07 2010) was submitted on the Rio Park review page:

We were in Benidorm in November and had decided to miss our usual break at the end of January (Trying to economise) and instead we would have a winter break in the uk. Last night I was browsing to find a suitable coach trip and strayed onto Thomsons site and found a really good deal at the Rio Park at the end of February so got it booked today.
We have never stayed in the Rio Park before but have always heard good reports.

Anyone stopped here lately always stop on the indoor market side but this hotel seems very cheap and only going for a week just want to know if food ok and clean also anyone know if it has free wifi, in 2 minds wether to book the Ambassordor but its £110 dearer and with money tight it seems a lot more just for the extra meal and free wifi for 3 of us

Rio Park has free WiFi for guests. It is clean and the food was good last time we stayed. We thought it was better than the Ambassador.

Just thought I would comment on the yellow brick road. We are staying in Castilla Hotel, which is next to Rio Park. We have walked up and down the yellow brick road both during the day and night and although you do get a few drunks sitting down there, I have found it to be ok, it actually looks quite nice down there. Being mid July, and the amount of people around, I am guessing it maybe slightly safer than other times of the year.

If anyone is concerned about going down the yellow brick road, there are plenty of other options. I have found this week to be a really enjoyable one and never once felt unsafe and I hope you will feel the same and have just has a good time as we have.

Sue.
