Having thought long and hard about our summer holidays to Turkey, the following report is an honest and at times frank opinion about our experiences of the last 3 weeks in the resort of Marmaris and nearby resorts. Firstly let me just say that we went to Turkey with an open mind having read various reports on here and choose our resort to give the kids as much fun as possible. We did have the misfortune to travel in August which quite frankly we would not do again due to the heat but school holidays determined that one. However, all things considered we thought Marmaris was a beautiful resort by day,but rather noisy and at times 'in your face' a bit at night. Most Turkish folk we met were polite, but business is business wherever you go and at times it showed when a polite 'no thank you' was followed by an abrupt replay in Turkish. We did however do 6 day trips in all, including the Jeep Safari,Go Carting for the kids and Horse riding. My particular favourite day out was on board the 'Mega Diana' boat trip. Very relaxing and good value for money plus, it gave us all some idea of just how beautiful the bay of Marmaris and surrounding islands where. Our Apartments where fine, but again in hindsight, we where situated a long way from beach and the resort itself but again,we choose it. As far as prices went, well it was definitely cheaper than say Cyprus or mainland Spain both of whom we love. We found the local food both enjoyable and tasty with a fine selection of sweets to follow. I loved the honey and local pastry, leaving Hubby and the kids to devour the Turkish meat, but we also found some simple dishes like locally baked bread, cheese bake,Olives, nuts and feta cheese a delight for lunch. The pasta meals were exceptional, and the local meatball dishes became a firm favourite. We managed to avoid the Burger/chips and HP sauce, but a full English was cheap as chips if you liked that sort of food.
As far as travelling went, we got as far as Dalyan(mudbaths and all) whilst in the other direction we went to Turunc via the boat trip but, by far the best beach we visited was right on our doorstep in Icmeler (Food for thought perhaps on our next visit). We also met some people from Sweden who gave us a very good insight into life on board a Gulet and it sounded just like something me and Hubby would enjoy(some feedback anyone?)...maybe next year.
Thats about it,dont want to bore you anymore stuff you no doubt already know. Flight was on time with Sky Airlines, our private Taxi was easy and affordable... and we all got one hell of a suntan !
TESEKKURLER TURKEY !
Thanks for the nice report, it sounds like you had a good time. Next time you go try taking a trip round to the Bozburun peninsula to Selimiye and Bozburun itself. The scenery is so beautiful and the resorts very undeveloped. Another good place is Datca, just over an hour on a bus through the mountains. I am here at the moment and although it is unusually very hot this year, there is often a breeze making it more bearable. Although I know you can have a good and fairly inexpensive holiday in Marmaris, it is a resort mostly for foreign tourists and quite built up, there are so many far more beautiful places not so far from it. As for the gulet holidays, they are a lovely way to see the coast. If you can make up a large group of friends and family you could have one to yourselves otherwise you will be sharing with people you don't know and although that can be fun and you may make some lovely new friends, you could be stuck with people you don't like.
I see where your coming from re Gulet,we will do our homework. Had a quick look at the places you suggest. Look good, plus I like the sound of the resort of Kalkan in the other direction ? Both seem the place for some serious scenic R&R ?
PM if need be.
Rotterdam.
Great honest report and certainly not boring. Thanks for taking the time to share your views with us.
Yes enjoyed it too. I would really like to find out about where best to book a trip round Bozburun peninsula. On previous visits I've only ever done the local bays when I've done boat trips. Going back in four weeks and this sounds really appealing. Can anyone advise how/where to book this. We're staying in Icmeler but happy to book from Marmaris.
I would echo the comment above about Datca. It was recommended to us by the Apartment owner and, as we always hire a car, we drove there. We had been wandering through the market for about 10 minutes and not really getting hassled when my OH said "Have you noticed anything?". Me being male said "no, am I supposed to?". She replied " We are the only tourists here!". And apart from one other couple we spotted later it was all locals doing their shopping!
