We are due to fly out to Cancun on 1st October for two weeks, staying at the Riu Caribe hotel (which we have stayed at previously). My mother and father in law are at the same hotel just now and they called on Sunday to advise there had been a tragic accident at the hotel and that apparently a drunken Canadian girl had fallen or jumped from a balcony at the hotel and died. I've looked into the story on the internet and it seems that after an all day drinking session and consequent argument with her boyfriend, a young girl jumped off a balcony and committed suicide.
It was after reading that story, that I noticed another one.... a young English man feel from a balcony from the same hotel in June of this year to his death after partying with friends in their room.
So tragic and quite scary. As we've stayed at this hotel previously, I'm not concerned, as we know that the balconys are quite safe unless you were to think about sitting/balancing on one which you would never even consider unless you were full of alcohol.
It's a shame that the hotel, staff and guests have been affected by such tragedy twice in the last 4 months and I do hope that it doesnt put the hotel in a bad light or put people off visiting this hotel.
And of course, my thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those who sadly passed away through these unfortunate circumstances.
I am still in touch via facebook with one of the barmen at the caribe and he says "to much of the old Mexican marching juice".
The north Americans really do hit it hard during the day , far more than i have witnessed with Brits in the med on AI.
There seems to have be a spate of deaths and serious injuries involving UK holidaymakers abroad this year.
Hope your in laws have managed to enjoy the rest of there stay at this excellent hotel and hope you too have a great time .
There have been many deaths from falling off balcony's lately. There was one in Magaluf 2 weeks ago. Many think that Balcony "hopping" is a cool thing to do, unfortunately many of them are full of alcohol so have no co-ordination or balance.
