I had noticed that myself that prices had gone up dramatically , on average in Feb you were looking to pay approx £300 per week for a studio / one bed apartment

Fritz , unfortunately the days of Goa being a Poor mans Exotic Holiday are fading fast , It isnt surprising though , seeing that Indias economy is fast becoming one of the worlds major players , with the consequent knock on effect on the wealth of its population . Indias Domestic Tourists can now afford to Holiday in Goa in vast numbers , and have the money to outspend the Europeans , I have noticed this trend increasing year on year .
I have spoken with a few Hotel Managers recently and they tell me that this season they will have an 80%+ occupancy by Domestic Tourists , and are happy about that , as they tend to eat & drink in the hotel.
Its the same story on the Beach , shack owners are welcoming the domestic tourist with open arms ( not like the old days ) , one told me that he prefers the Indian tourist , as they dont like to lie all day in the sun , but prefer to enjoy eating & drinking inside the shack.
I for one , Love seeing and meeting the Indian Tourist , and them being on the same financial level as me , makes me not feel so guilty , mooching a beer ,only joking , they are really good fun.
But , for us , unfortunately it means fast rising price Increases , especially on accomodation/food , as their is now an in-built strong Domestic demand who can afford to pay.
I suppose we can blame Globalisation.

Excellent last post, it mirrors my feeling on the current position on Goa. Things are changing year on year with the huge increase of local tourists, and the corresponding rise in prices for accomodation. It's not really a cheap winter sun destination any more in my opinion, though I'm sure lots of people will have a different say on this. An earlier poster noted £300 per week for a studio/ one bedded appnt. in Feb. certainly far more than I would be prepared to pay. When one takes into account that in general, accomodation on the whole in Goa is of a more basic type than most other tourist orientatad coutries , certainly in the Far East, it becomes even less of a bargain. I'm not complaining re this, we're off in four weeks time, but I feel that when one takes into account the price of fares to Goa, the days of cheap holidays here are long gone. We had a couple of weeks in Thailand last month, we also visit there every year, and the cost to us there, year on year, is not rising nearly as much as in Goa these last few years

To be honest, I haven't noticed prices going up that much but that is based on the last 5 years and not 15 ! What has changed is the exchange rate having moved from R85 to R70 or lower. The price of a package holiday doesn't seem that much different. I think we paid about £1600 Feb 2007 for three weeks at the Lagoa Azul with First Choice. The package price had gone up last year but with DIY down to bargain prices with Qatar on the scene, three weeks at the Marinha Dourada would have cost me £1222. This year 3 weeks would have cost £1574 so in actual fact it's worked out cheaper 3 years on even if there was a jump from last year.
If truth be known, it was my fault that I chose the wrong day to book my hotel as it cost me a bit extra delaying which added £120 to the bill.
Looking into the cost, the largest part of the increase comes from the air travel and the extra taxes we are paying and that applies wherever we travel.
On the ground in Goa a Kingfisher had gone up last year from R55 in 2007 to R70 in your average bar. One or two did try for R100 ! Food didn't seem any more expensive than before. Taxis might well cost more but that is hardly surprising as fuel has rocketed worldwide.
The prices I quote for the holiday are based on the cost for two people assuming we only stay(ed) for 3 weeks. Personally, at around £210 per week for B&B at a decent hotel with a pool and room cleaning I wouldn't think of DIY on accommodation unless it didn't involve any work and had a pool.
We return to Goa because it is cheaper than anywhere else that can offer similar opportunities for winter sun, excellent and varied eating and personal safety. If anyone can think of anywhere else let me know and we'll try it next year !

I'm not sure where people are getting there apartment rental prices from. Here in the Bogmalo area all the 2 bedroom apartments are less than £300 per month.

I find there are 2 bedroom apartments, and there are 2 bedroom apartments! If you know what i mean! :que
It depends on the area, the facilities, and conveniences! There is such a big price difference according to these.

I agree re some of the apartments on offer can be Flea pits. But,the majority in this area are brand new.Anyone wanting an apartment is better to just book into a hotel for a night then ask around. You will save yourself a fortune rather than booking one off the internet.I have just booked a 2 bedroom fully furnished flat for someone and it worked out at £190 per month.

jcbrum , that is an excellent piece of advice . Their are a lot of British Tourists who bought properties in Goa , and who try to rent them out at exorbitant prices to the unsuspecting "traveller" via Internet property web sites , long before they ever set foot in Goa , who through their lack of "local" knowledge , go ahead and book , thinking that they are getting a great deal -- unfortunately many ,once they arrive in Goa , find out to the contrary , this is not only disheartening to the person , but gives Goa a bad name .
The other consequence of these exorbitant prices is that , the Local " letters" of property , see the Foreigner getting away with charging these prices , so they do what anyone would do , and up their own price.
So as jcbrum said , get on the ground in Goa , and ask about. The local bars of calangute and candolim ,are full of long term tourists , most of whom will be able to point you in the right direction.

i was quite surprised at the price of renting a private appt.about £300 per week but in saying that its a beautiful 2 bed appt. the same type of thing in Europe height of the summer would be at least double

the £300 a wk is from English owners, i tried to rent one and was shocked at the silly money they quote :(
Mahal has got it bang on!

I'll stick to private guesthouses as there are some real gems out there :tup

If you hunt around you can still get good priced 2 bedroom apartments for around £100 - £150 per month - i think on average our volunteers are paying about 9000 rs per month - these are all nice clean places generally in calangute. On of the volunteers got offer ac. Swimming pool single bed in complex for 8000 rs - there still are good prices you just need to hunt

I can confirm what poipleshadow says -- 100-150 Pounds per MONTH is an acceptable rate to pay for a good quality , central located 1 / 2 Bed Apartment in Baga / Calangute / Candolim . Please dont get duped into paying more , but if you are only staying for 2-3wks , you should expect to be charged for the full month .
My advice to anyone coming for a longer period would be to book into a Hotel or guest-house for a few days , and get out and about and ask on the ground , you will be quickly inundated with offers .

Am I missing out here, or is there a mistake in the total given in the last post ? It seems too much of a steal to me, a real bargain price.

Hi gramps , No , what fauxpas is paying per month , is about right ,(but on the high side) so long as it includes all bills and cable ,and is a modern well appointed apartment 15000 is about 200 quid , ie 50 a wk.
Just for info , cable costs about 4 quid a month in goa , for a full package.

After much searching the cheapest place I could find without being on the ground was £ 400 for two weeks but it's a 3 double bed villa with a pool (communal I think).

Anyway undeterred I started e-mailing the hotels to see if I can do a deal. Without too much effort most of them are willing to drop to half the published daily rate and some even more. At the moment I've a choice of three or four, all apartment rooms, at between Rs 1200 - 1500 per night. I'm sure I can get this reduced further although I reckon Mahal is right, you won't beat being there in person.
