Roxey, is the Bistro opened again? It was shut the end of last season, I believe the owner had gone back to England

Anybody been to the Bistro since Paul & Ola left?

We tried After Seven the other night, a place that comes with high praise but I was very disappointed

We used to go there as a treat but it's not a patch on what it used to be since Chef Soumyen left to start his own place (nearby, across the main Cal/Can road). Soumyen's is top notch - food is unfailingingly excellent even if the ambience is not that great.

Mostly we eat at the less expensive places and I love 'em! Plantain Leaf, Anand Sagar, Viva Goa etc. You can fill yer boots for a couple of quid.

Off next week staying in Candolim and making my list of places to eat. Recommendations listed so far are:

Tuscany Gardens
Cecilias
Stonehouse
Rising Waves
Currey House
Kalingas

Jazz Corner - excellent food with live enterntainent and best night is Monday with "Roy from England" - he gets the place rocking! For the best food, Rising Waves cannot be beaten (in my opinion).

Hi Bardez , Tried the Sportsman breakfast 99rups -- Brilliant , For the English breakfast . Their are quite a few bars now following suit , and cutting their prices , at long last . Their are a few eateries now offering a 99rup deal , so for all the English breakfast lovers , shop around .
The cost of Ingredients - 2 eggs 4 rps
2 bacon slice 8rps
1 sausage 5rps
1 tomato 3rps
mushrooms 4rps
beans 4rps
toast 1rp per slice
tea-bag 1rp

Total cost of ingredients is 30 - 35 rps --- so they are still making a good / fair return .

where is the Jazz Corner situated Candybabe?

Jazz Corner is in Candolim, just before Beach Road on right hand side. Quite a big place - just past the Sea Shell. There are usually a couple of the waiters standing outside wearing their distinctive blue shirts. They are all lovely boys (well men, but boys to me!) and will make you welcome. Never had a bad meal in there.

The two restaurants I would recommend the most from our trip earlier this month are Rising Waves and Coyote [which is round the corner from Teama]. Both have excellent food and service. We also visited the Carvery, Curry House, Foxys,Angara and Green Jacket which were quite good and Fisherman's Cove,the one near the market, which was rather disappointing.

We are here in Goa, and went to a fabulous 5 star hotel the other night for a meal, and a nosey round!!!
It is called the Rio and is at the back of the Marinha Dourada in Arpora! Food was good and not too pricey for the standard of the place! Well worth a visit! Waterfalls, beautiful statues and two pools! There is 3 restaurants, 1 Italian, 1 Goan. 1 vegetarian! Give it a go!!

Bisto is open and as good as ever, went there last night.

As for cecelias, I wouldn't put my name to it.for probably 50 rupes more you get a much better meal at the mermaid or bistro.unless you want chilli con carne that tastes like rogan Josh? If so, cecelias is the way forward!

Shame you had a bad one Parax, mind you I wouldn't have chosen chilli. Their seafood curries are excellent, not tiny pieces of fish but proper steaks and plenty of it, and their non Indian dishes such as Chicken Cordon Blue or the seafood platter delicious. Everyone we recommended went back at least once.
The Rio resort in Arpora is a nice spot for a beer too, and they only charged R90 for a large Kingfisher which is the same as many shacks and bars charge.
We only went to Top Nosh once, the place is very pleasant, I had a great curry but my o/h's chicken tandoori was the worst we have ever eaten.It tasted as if it had been sitting in a bed of salt overnight !
Once again shows the problem of delivering consistently and really you should discount reviews until enough people have passed comment to form a reasonable opinion. However, if someone doesn't start the ball rolling there won't be any reviews !

Consistency is the key tbh.however, there shouldn't be great meals and poor meals on the same menu, how they can call their fillet steak "fillet", I have no idea?

As regards top nosh, we went to the old one three times before it moved and would call it average at best.

Off to the stonehouse tonight which we love, however, a lot of people don't!

Just shows how subjective opinions of restaurants are!

Right well we are off to Candolim for the first time in four weeks time and based on this thread and other forums I've compiled this list of places to go.... and seeing as we're only there 10 nights we will have to miss some of them out! Are there any glaring ommissions - places that we absolutely must eat in?

We're going to give Top Nosh and After Seven a miss.

All Spice ( you mentioned it twice),Starlight and Spice Oven are all in Arpora so will cost you a taxi fare of R400 return at least so, although they are all excellent, I wouldn't go unless you are planning to go to the Saturday night market but they are likely to be busy, especially All Spice.
Jamies is right at the top end of Baga, again excellent but will probably cost R400 on top of the bill there too.
Again on a personal basis Kalingas was average.Victors was very good but expensive for what it is and what he offers. You must book the day before there.We thought the seafood platter at Ceceilias was equally good and better value at almost half the price.
Looking for a special meal I would add Souymens for the food if not the ambience although we didn't go this year. I would agree to discount After Seven. If you happen to be in the centre of Calangute the Thai in the Mira hotel is excellent.
If you are staying around the Beach Rd area do pay a visit to Antonio's shack, even if it's just for a sunset beer and a peek at what others are eating. Their BBQ night was outstanding value so go if they have one ! Enjoy !

The Bistro is as good as ever, it is been run by the very near same staff as last year. There was tales going round that it closed when paul&ola left in march which were untrue, it kept open until the very end of april. The owner is Tony Cardozo, who owns the sunset beach resort it backs onto,he has owned the Bistro since it was built.

DaveWales thanks very much! It's sometimes hard to tell where the restaurants are as posters tend to forget to say which town they're in so that's really useful.
