Well it really depends on what you mean by 'have access to'.
The guy sitting at the desk at Las Vegas airport certainly doesn't have direct access to the UK criminal records databases. But he (or rather his boss in the back office) can certainly go through official channels and say we've got this guy who has aroused our suspicions, what do we need to know about him?
What he does have access to is a list of people/passports, supplied by the UK government, who are 'of interest'. What you have to do to get on that list - pass. But it's rather more than 'wanted by interpol'. A year or so back a comprehensive data sharing agreement was reached and I would expect it's implemented by now.
Will you be OK? Almost certainly. But it might depend on whether that 'minor conviction' is as minor as you think.
i went to new york last year, filled in the esta online and printed it off, and declared on it that i had a criminal record [although from 30 years ago] and was passed through without having to apply for a visa. did notice on the website that it said even if your record is "spent " it may still go against you,but my understanding is that after a certain period [25 years i think] they are then destroyed so no-one could then be able to access them.
The ESTA form is designed to refuse an ESTA and tell you to apply for a visa if you admit to a crime.
So either it was malfunctioning when you applied or you actually inadvertently ticked the NO box.
In either event it seems to indicate that the guy in New York didn't know you had a record.
First time to USA since ESTA came along. Am I right in thinking that now we have paid and been accepted for a ESTA, we no longer need to complete a VISA?
Is this all we need to do or do we need to complete/take anything else?
Thanks for your help.

Do you mean the I-94W Visa Waiver? You no longer need to complete that since January of this year. All you complete on the flight is the Customs Declaration form.
You don't need a copy of the ESTA as it is electronic and will show up when they scan your passport at Immigration. However you can print one off for your own records.

I was considering applying for a visa for him but since it was a surprise holiday I couldn't really do it and took a chance that paid off.
Glad I didn't bother with the visa, saved a lot of money not getting one which meant more spending money when we were there
I have a conviction that I was more than a little concerned about but stated NO on the ESTA form
Nothing whatsoever happened at US Customs. Well, there was some violent chemical reactions in my brain caused by fairly extreme anxiety, but that's it
Sailed through, no issues at all
This week I received over a dozen emails from the ESTA service because the ESTAs I took out for a school trip 2 years ago expired!
Am now thinking again of going next May on a coach tour, I know I will have to re-apply and pay, but the system won't be confused with one having been issued? Sorry just my neurosis
Can I also ask have they stopped asking you to fill in the old green visa form on board?
Thanks
A new application will cancel any existing ESTA. You no longer have to complete the green visa waiver, only the blue customs declaration.
Thanks Luci
2nd question.
I am flying to San Francisco for 3 days Sept then flying to Vegas .. when I fill in my APIS details to I put address in USA as San Fran or Vegas?
Thank you
if you only filled in your ESTA just before your last trip, should be ok as there valid for 2 years? Do you have the number you can go online & check when it expires just for peace of mind if you like?
Also APIS you put as san francisco as its only the first nights accomodation.. i think..
Were doing the same trip as you in november though!!
It is the details of your first night's accommodation that is required. However it is not mandatory to revise these details on the ESTA, only the details marked with a red * are mandatory.

I have had a new passport since Sept so I guess I will have to re fill it in then and pay for it now
For anyone that may be interested, My husband has now recieved another visa from the US embassy.. Its another 12 month multiple entry one. So very happy again!! Didnt have to wait as long as previously either..
Were all booked up & ready to go on our next holiday!!
Myself and hubby are applying for a new passport after the new year, am i correct in thinking we do not need to apply again for the ESTA as it will have the info on our passports?
ESTA is valid for 2 years, or until your passport expires. As the original ESTA will have details of your old passports, you will need to re-apply with your new passport details.
Thanks David
It's currently $14.
