Hello Everyone, just got back from my beloved Greece today (Kefalos in Kos), flew in with Thomas Cook Airlines more about that later, definitely not for the claustrophobic, anyway here we go! Kefalos is slowly changing from an idyllic, lazy, laid back little resort, to a bit of a run down backwater, the scenery is it's normal stunning self, but goodness me, they are letting this beautiful little resort go to the dogs. I found the streets very littered with rubbish, dead snakes and cats just left on the road, everywhere was overgrown with weeds, quite a few restaurants have closed down due to the current economic climate in Greece, many of the shops were closed and For Rent signs were everywhere.
The really good restaurants like Sebstians were still attracting scores of people and the food there is delicious and still very cheap, we had a starter and main for 12 Euros, and believe me there was much to eat, and a huge menu for choice. Our Hotel was the Athinoula which is a 3 star, but I would certainly have given it 4 stars. The rooms were slightly smaller than usual, however they were absolutely immaculate, sheets were changed every other day and towels daily, the rooms were cleaned thoroughly every day except Sunday, it is a fairly modern hotel approximately 10 years old, and is family owned by Mr and Mrs Peros who along with their family will go out of their way to help in anyway.
The weather during our stay was not the best so for an entire week we could not go on the beach, we even had a mini earthquake!! I do love Greece, and I have been to Kefalos many times but I think this may be my last time, time for somewhere new, just one more thing, although the Greeks are on their knees with debt, they are still as charming as ever to tourists, how very sad!!
I suppose its possible that so early in the season they just hadn't got the resort ready. I dont understand why they cant remove dead cats though and most people would prefer not to be reminded that there are snakes about in Greece. We are off to Syros and Tinos in a couple of weeks, hope we dont get the same neglected resort feeling.
Hey RDV! We are to Tinos and Syros in July/August. Also Kythnos and Andros. Let my know how it is. Kini is the resort we are going to in Syros, and it looks lovely.
