Hi,
We're looking to go for week in Devon or Cornwall and wanting to try somewhere we've not been before. The shortlist is now down to 3 places, Falmouth, Dartmouth or Exmouth but we're not sure which to go for, so hopefully someone has some recommendations. We are a couple in our 40s with no kids or pets, looking for somewhere by the sea with a good selection of pubs and restaurants and hopefully an artistic community. The place shouldn't be too small so that we can find enough variety in the pubs and restaurants. Our favourite destination is St Ives, so that should give you some idea what we are looking for. For those that know it, we thought Padstow was a bit small, so would like to go somewhere bigger than that.
Any comments or suggestions welcomed!
Exmouth:
Pros : Absolutely MILES of seafront and clean beaches
Good selection of bars
Easy train connection to Exeter and other wescountry attractions
You can get a ferry to the other side of the Exe to starcross and then explore Dawlish,
Teignmouth etc
Cons : Not many decent restaurants (IMHO)
Rather quiet, not much nightlife
Dartmouth:
Pros : Some old world charm, but mostly for the tourists
Strong naval connections, with the adjacent college
Car/Ped ferry over to Other side of river, easy route then to Paignton (good zoo), Brixham
(quaint fishing village) and Torquay (nuff sed!)
Some good (and expensive!) restaurants
Fair selection of "olde worlde" pubs
Adjacent South Hams district picturesque
Cons : Expensive!
Very congested in peak season
Part of the town burned down last year and I'm not sure whether repairs complete yet
Best of luck wherever you choose
ATB,J.
