If it's a longer flight and headsets are included I'll choose a film to watch. Firstly I take shoes off and store them in overhead bag and put socks on. I'm such a fidget I spend most of the journey swapping from one arse cheek to the other. Why doesn't anyone else seem to have to do this? Spend the other part of the journey looking around to see who has spotted me and my nodding head syndrome. I thought nobody ever did notice but with you lot saying how you spend your time nosying at what other people are doing I'm not so sure.

I fidget too, usually trying to fit my long legs under the seat in front as my knees touch the back of the seats. The seat pitch is too narrow so I feel as though my blood supply has been cut off mid thigh
i darent try to sleep tho im paranoid in case i snore, no idea if i do or not as im asleep or even worse.... dribble

When it was just me I was happy to just sit and read but my children are young so I spend most of the time trying to keep them entertained
I start off by looking at the in-flight magazine, and choose what I want to eat and drink . During take off I say a few prayers and normally cut hubby's hand with my fingernails. Once up in the air I can relax. I read my book, watch a film, read a magazine, play with my DS, game of cards, eat and drink
I spend the first 30 mins or so waiting for the plane to crash - once we are up in the air and cruising I relax a bit and might read but struggle to get stuck into a book because I'm a bit on edge with every odd noise or bump. My 5 year old plays her DS or watches her little DVD player.
LOL! I'm the same as you and also can't relax until we're cruising, even then I'm still on edge and there's no way I can concentrate on reading a book. I usually have quite a few wines and listen to music through the headphones to drowned out any engine sounds that will freak me out.
Me and MRSMG chill with a few wines, do a movie or two and generally try for a couple of hours kip... especially when we're coming back from the caribbean as we've got a long drive when we land back in the UK... for that reason we do the "upgrade" thing and have some "squidgey" pillows..
i have come to recognise the sights out the window, so know where we are and can pick out the towns down below.
unfortunately travelling the route so often it gets a bit like commuting to work, and takes about the same time, and so i tend to find the whole flying experience a bit of a bore and treat it purely as a means to an end.
I've just booked flights to South Africa for next winter and I'm already stressing out over the flight. it's not that I'm a nervous flyer just a bored one. On every long haul flight I take, after about two hours I tell myself this is the last time I'm flying anywhere that takes longer than 2hrs but of course the lure of new places takes over after I've been back home for a while. This time OH is going with me (a rare occurence) and like a fine wine he doesn't travel well, so that's added stress. . At least we have been able to reserve our seats and hopefully the reservation will be honoured and I won't have to ask anyone to move when I go on my regular hikes through the plane.
I am dreading the flight to LA ( I am alwasy bored before they have even shut the doors)..then the even longer one from LA to Auckland...
My boredom threshold is so............ oooooooh look shiny.............
11 1/2 hrs Val.
The kids have their DSi's but the eldest is scared of flying after very bad turbulance a few years ago...got him an Ipod Shuffle last year and he was much calmer. This year I've bought us all Ipod Nano's...I've downloaded all 3 series of Outnumbered plus a few films for me and the hubby and have downloaded a few films the kids haven't seen yet....hoping it will keep us all quiet and entertained.
bit of a fidget before take off as i really dont like the experience , i shed a few tears in departures when they call the flight as i know its either get on or have a row with hubby when i say i dont want to go (which i do really , just hate getting there), so its the in flight magazine , then my mp3 player , then in and out of my bag for sweets , pens to do x words , once up in the air i might look out the window once or twice , but if i feel any turbulence i grab hubby's hand , i'm also listening to the different sound the plane makes and then i'm thinking the worse , have never watched a film inflight , but am thinking about taking a portable dvd player and a few films with me this year .
I have to say that we all must cover our fears/anxieties well. Im a definate people watcher and I rarely see any nervous flyers and always feel embarassed because I thought it was only me that did it, but it sounds as if there are a lot of us who do the whole grabbing of hands thing at the slightest "abnormal" movement or noise. My favourite is grabbing hold of the tray - like that is going to help me
Watch out of the window, read in flight mag, and my mags I bought in airport, wait for the meal to come around, have a couple of glasses of wine, and then when I hear the captain say we are over the pyrennes (bilbao usually) I know we are near spain so Im constantly looking at my watch...
I am scared stiff of flying but will not let it put me off going abroad! As soon as the doors shut my husband will be snoring so I just dig my fingers in the arm rests, close my eyes and dont open them untill we hit the tarmac at my destination!! Sometimes i even pretend to be asleep so i dont have to speak to the air crew about food, gifts, drinks! Always makes me laugh when on the way out of the plane the crew say you slept all the way!! little do they know i can repeat every single word thats been said around me Off to Barbados september wonder how long I can keep my eyes closed for.
Amanda, you're like my friend who closes her eyes as soon as she sits down and sits rigid in her seat. Even on a long haul she won't go for a walk to do a bit of exercise to help prevent dvt- she's even too afraid to get up to go to the toilet so holds it all in

My daughter used to be the same only because when she was on her first flight 6 years old she flushed the chain and thought she was getting sucked out
