I could be wrong! I'm far from an expert! :D

But I think Gran Alacant is the region

Santa Pola is the town

I've driven through it I'm sure, can't tell you much else though.

You might be surprised at the weather!
we went to Benidorm Oct/Nov it was quite warm and didn't rain at all!

I think you're staying in Gran Alacant which is a town between Santa Pola and Alicante, and it comes under the Ayunatamiento of Santa Pola.
I would guess a taxi would be around €15-€18 ( based on the distance and what I pay in the CDS, including the airport supplement)
Lots of info on the link below, including info of the local bus which runs on a circular route around Gran Alacant itself.

Altomar 2 is an urbanisation of about 800 two and three bedroom apartments located off Avenida Escandinavia in Gran Alacant which is a small town between Alicante and Santa Pola and about 11km from Alicante El Altet airport. A taxi will take 10 to 15 minutes and the cost will be under 20 Euros.

You will be within easy walking distance of bus stops, tourist land train stop and a selection of bars and restaurants. There are some 60 to 70 bars and restaurants in Gran Alacant with Mercadona, Consum, Supervalu, Maxcoop, Lidl and Aldi supermarkets. The nearest supermarkets to Altomar 2 are the two Maxcoops and both are open Sunday mornings.

Going to Gran Alicant in early July, with wife and kids (aged 8 & 15).

Looking at various villa/apartment rentals and the options are narrowed down to the Monte y Mar area (lower or upper). Would any experts in the area have views on these areas and which is best or any alternative ideas?

We would like somewhere in easy walking distance of supermarket and restaurants and shops. Don't intend car hire at this stage.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Owen, we stayed in Gran Alacant last year as we stayed on an Urbanisation a few years ago and thought they are fine for a break from the hustle of Benidorm.
We have just booked to go back in September to the same apartment in Alto Mar 2. A lot of people call the whole area a concrete jungle, and in a way they are right.
All of Gran Alacant is split in to zones and are all similar with an area called a square, where you will find various restaurants and bars, not loads but enough to enjoy somewhere each evening. Bars and restaurants are also found dotted along most roads.
Don't know if you are going for a private pool, but if not every place seems to have key access to communal pool use.
Monte y Mar is further down from where we stayed (away from the sea) and not too far from the Commercial center, with big supermarkets/bars/restaurants etc.
Everywhere seems to be decent whatever you go for, we enjoyed a good curry at a place called Safron at Monte y Mar.
Can't really see you walking from there to the beach for the day, but there is a land train every hour and buses from the commercial center.
Weighing it up for you, my choice would be Alto Mar 2 more choice of bars/restaurants, easier walk down to the beach (but not back !! it's known as cardiac hill).
Anything further, just ask - I'm checking things out, as we missed a a few things last time.
