Hi all
just a quick question.....
We were in Goa in October....and we could not find a phone that worked to phone home....all the locals were saying that the system was down
I was wondering if it was because the season had not started. !!!!
My brother and sister-in-law are there now, and have said that they cannot find a phone that works for the same reason..
Can anyone throw any light on the situation....
Many thanks
My friend used a public phone to ring home on Xmas day, it was on the street off beach road in Calangute that leads to the bus station, it was an internet cafe also.
I just buy a sim card when i get there and thats me sorted for the next 3 weeks !! think it is about £6 including so many hours talk time/texts
we all know you can get a sim card for cheap calls....i was not enquiring about that...
its the local phones i want to know about.... because i dont want to take my phone and charger with me.

i have to phone home to make sure the house is still there....got a 20year old lad at home
Like you say its too much trouble getting a sim every time.
Once had to get my phone unlocked to accept the Indian sim....when i got home the phone would not do 50% of what it should have done...
Noggin just get a cheapo phone from somewhere like tesco or asda around a tenner then use it for Indian sims ,when you are here dont use your uk phone
Hi we are staying at the C.S.M. is there anywhere near here that I could get a sim card from please?
Bluemoon yes you will see them advertised outside the shops, lots of places do them, expect to pay 600-650 rupees for airtel with 450 credit on it so cost of sim is 150 rupee, that amount will last quite a while

Hi dragon07
Do you mean contract phone, i have another opened phone, would that be ok to take, then buy sim over there.

Thanks Dragon
re public phones, in the past I have used payphones in the Elephant shop near Magnum resort and the cost was only a few rupees.
Noggin most of the phone box's are now being deleted because most people are using their mobiles to make calls and the goan's aren't making any money on calls we found a call phone opposite Teama's on the beach rd, and one in the elephant shop next to magnums also their's one opposite the mango grove/tree restaurant when open that is, it's getting harder to find places now best off taking a cheap mobile or hiring one from the elephant shop if need be.
apologies to everyone for late replies my internet is down yet again, what i meant was not to use your contract or UK pay as you go it is simply too expensive plus the person who receives has to pay as well ,much better to bring an old unlocked phone or buy one from somewhere like Asda or tesco and put in an Indian sim card, like in the Uk phone boxes are dissapearing as more people use mobiles
how much are the mobile phones to hire from the Elephant shop....i think i will go down that route...
I dont know noggin never enquired theres also a shop/ office next to San Ramosa's up some stairs he rent's out phones too but dont know what he charges either i have in the past took my own phone and had it unlocked over here then bought the Airtel sim card when over there looks like thats the way it's got to be from now on.I did buy a phone Vodafone 125 from Bruno's just to use over there quite a simple one no flash cost £11 then had to put calls on a extra 900 rps you should be able to get one over here a lot cheaper then that.
