Without even leaving Sousse you can visit Maison Dar Essid in the Medina which is fascinating and costs 4 dinar (£2). If you google it you will be taken to a You Tube Video which gives you an idea. I was there in March so ignore the information that it is closed as a nice young man has taken over following the death of the previous owner. Don't bother with the Catacombs. When they have finished excavating etc. they might be more interesting but there really isn't much to see at present. The Mausoleum of the President before Ben Ali at Monastir is well worth a visit - all gold leaf and gorgeous. Monastir also has a nice Medina and port area.
For light relief try and see "Changing Ladies" a long-established drag show which as well as doing a tour of various hotels puts on a show at Casino Caraibe on Wednesday evenings. The Casino itself has not operated as such for many years since the manager absconded with the money but the building is still used for shows.
Carthage is worth a visit if you like history, also the Bardo Museum near Tunis and Sidi Bou Said is beautiful, with pretty blue and white houses covered in bougainvillia and lovely sea views though the streets can be a bit steep.
Just down the road from Sousse is Port El Kantaoui, a favourite of many on here, with nice restaurants, a musical fountain and a Marina with boats from all parts of Europe and beyond.
