I agree with you Fi, when I had a young family it tended to be one two week holiday, now I would far rather have three one week holidays with a few months break in between. Much more fun and think I would get bored with two weeks in the same place and I miss my home. You can go to more destinations, or revisit places you went for two weeks years ago, but don't really want to spend a fortnight in now as you are pretty familiar with them.

If money was no object I would have a week in the spring, one in the summer, and one in the autumn.

If I couldn't go for two weeks, then I'd prefer to go for one, rather than not go at all. I think the major stumbling block is, that it's usually far cheaper to go for a fortnight, than to go for 2 separate weeks, especially if flying from one of the regional airports.

Well I have been saying that Since hubby retired recently that's just what I think.

The last few years we have gone on one week hols, I liked them spread out through the year and that way had shorter spells in between going away, I only do shorthaul flights and it suited us less time to settle in etc.

However I feel more relaxed these days about leaving the house and other day to day things that crop up so if it was left to me I could easily go away even longer than a couple of weeks. If you are working and only have so many weeks off I think one week jollies spread through the year are great.

I disagree. I went away to Jersey for 6 nights, 5 full days. Definetely not classed as a standard break, as I started my holiday on SUNDAY and ended it on a SATURDAY. Although in the B&B the lady thought I left Friday and I was like nope, I don't leave until the Saturday, and she was are you sure, are you sure? I knew when I left, but that was an interesting moment. 5 full days suited me better than some other breaks you can have. When I go away later though I'm away for 12 nights which again is perfect as I have some transit days, ie, stopovers etc.

we only take a week at a time, twice we have tried 2 weeks and once 10 days but the Pendle witch gets bored after 5/6 days and wants to come home

For me its not about preferring one week to two- I would almost always go 2 or more if I could. But if its a case of staying at home or going away for a week, then we will go away( if we can afford it!)

I've done a month, 3 weeks, 2 weeks, 5 days, 2 days.

Even the 2 day one which was a cruise to Ostend felt as though I'd had a break. I think it's the packing of your bag and spending the night away from home.

The 5 day trip, I've done a couple as hubby works away from home & is back weekends so a quick break with the girls is Mon-Fri. Each time it's felt like a week as we've had such a good time.

I must have gypsy blood as I'll go anywhere at the drop of a hat. I even used to wish hubby was a long haul transport driver as I'd have happily sat in the cab and gone with him

For me, I have to get out of the area I live in, I would go mad if I didn't go away for time off from work. I need to get away just to be anonymous for the day if that makes sense? I do enjoy channel hopping as well.

I know people who won't go away in Europe for less than 2 weeks as they say it's not worth it by the time you get to the airport, check in, fly there and transfer at the other end. And that is flying from an airport 10 minutes away!

We went to Girona for 3 nights. That involved a 5 hour drive to Prestwick and an overnight stay at the airport before flying next day. We had a great time and would certainly do it again.

We have gone to Vegas for a week and that was with 18 hours travelling time not counting an hour to get to the airport and checking in 2 hours before the flight. Like Fiona, if it was a choice between only going for a week and not going at all the week wins every time.

Within Europe I rarely go away for more than a week.

On longhaul holidays I like to go away for as many weeks as possible as I am usually touring, so need plenty of time, though I did once go to Kenya for just one week, would have liked longer there but it wasn't possible to take off more time from work. Would have hated to miss the holiday though as it was very special and one week was certainly better than none at all.

I did once fly to New York for just four days.

I enjoy a 2 week break in the summer and a week at Easter. I prefer to stick to a short flight for the week's holiday- the sooner we get there, the sooner the holiday starts. I have gone for a long weekend to Eastern Europe but that was over New Year when I didn't want to be away from home for too long.

We did a week once , due to lack of money. Now always two weeks for holidays abroad , it would be longer if we could get the time off together. I start planning my next holiday when one finishes, and we save a set amount every month towards it. I do that much research that I have loads of things I want to do on holiday, and seldom get to do them all. You would almost have to tie me to a lounger I just like to be out and about.
We`ve been going to Edinburgh for short breaks 2 or 3 times a year and there are still lots of things we`ve not seen or done yet.

For our city breaks, 3 or 4 days is ideal - I wouldn't want a week. Airports don't bother me - I quite like them , but not the journey to get there. We flew from Stanstead to Estonia - a 5 hour car journey, and as much as I'd love to go back - that car journey is putting me off.

I like both, but if I am going long haul then it has to be two weeks, mainly for the return as I do suffer terribly from jet-lag and takes me ages to get back to 'normal'. I do like to have a couple of 1 week holidays on anywhere up to 4 hours - depending on how the funds are going of course.

Obviously the longer the better however we have been on several 1 week holidays (not long haul though). Few weeks back we went for a week as it was the first holiday with the baby, and we wanted to test the water , but all went swimmingly

My hubby was one of those people who wouldn't go for a week, his argument was that the flight costs the same and the second week wasn't much more.

I have managed to 'drag' him away for the odd week here and there, including having a quick week in Benidorm from the 28th April this year for his birthday.

We've done 7 days, 10 days, 11 days, 14 days, 5 weeks, 7 weeks (OZ) and 8 weeks ( mostly in Spain)
Apart from the finances, various circumstances have in the past dictated the duration of the holiday.EG: work, kids in school, being a career for elderly parents and having the cat for the last 20 years.

Now, we can go where we like and whenever we like, so I wouldn't rule out any duration or destination while ever we can afford it and have reasonably good health, and even my OH has finally come around to this way of thinking.

As it's never much more price wise,we always go for two weeks on our main summer holiday. We try to get away for a week for an extra holiday,sometimes even two if we use our holiday from work carefully. Like Glynis I will go anywhere at the drop of a hat. We once did three days in Macedonia which involved travelling to Heathrow,two flights and a long drive the other side but although it was tiring,it was worth it. You can always catch up with your sleep when you get home!

We used to go for 2 weeks in April and 2 weeks in October and had some really great holidays , but sometimes the last few days seemed a bit too much and just wanted to be back home and also we didnt like waiting 6 months between so we booked 3 separate weeks and had a week at home , we found the week at home was just wasted and so we now usually go 4 separate weeks , in march typically somewhere like Egypt , then June and September , somewhere like Cyprus , Lanzarote and in November we would go to Dubai , I collect Hilton points and BA points so use them to try and subsidise the cost , none of them are at peak times so costs are not too bad , live fairly close to an airport that offers enough choices to fly to these destinations so a week is long enough for a rest and not too long to get bored or too lazy and getting regular breaks from work is great because we all have to work so much harder these days and I'm getting old and worn out , I need regular sun to warm up me aching bones !!!!
