This is long overdue but as I made the notes I thought I must get round to typing it up.
Monday 27 August 2012
We left home at 5:00 a.m. after 1½ hours sleep. There was a new check in system at terminal 2 at Manchester airport, we had a 20-30 minute delay. Unfortunately there are no decent restaurants in Terminal 2 but we settled for a cooked breakfast at a dirty table. Eventually arrived in Turunc at 6:00 p.m. after changing to a mini bus in Marmaris. We had a lovely room at the top of Es Apartments, up 138 steps. We had 3 balconies with sea and pool views. We quickly went to change some money at J&M Travel and had a good look around the restaurants. We went back to unpack and shower and change and ate at the Es restaurant as we were now getting tired. The food was beautiful and the wine was quite good.
Tuesday 28 August 2012
I slept in longer than expected while Liz went shopping for bread and fruit for breakfast. After breakfast we finished unpacking and went for a walk around the resort to see what was around. We discovered M48 bar and promised to go back there in the evening. We had the reps meeting at 1:00 p.m. which was a waste of time as we found we knew more about the resort from people's reports on TA than she did. She said no way could we walk to Amos it was much too far, which it wasn't as we found out later. Good job we listened to people on here. We had lunch on our balcony and then headed off to the beach. When the sun disappeared from the beach we went back to our room, had a cold Efes on the balcony and planned our 2 weeks. We had dinner at the Sahin Restaurant and Steak House – Seafood pizza, free pidi bread and coffees and we also ordered Baklava for dessert. After dinner we headed off to M48 bar to see the break dancers doing their thing, they were very good.
Wednesday 29 August 2012
As she did every morning Liz went off to buy bread (I know I am lucky to have her to climb the 138 steps one more time than me every day but she is younger!). After breakfast we headed off to J&M to book our trips and change some more money. Back to the apartment where Mehmet arranged for us to go to Turunc Hotel for massages on Friday morning. Back to the beach for the day, we used the beds at Mine'm restaurant as there was no charge, we just bought our beers there and he was quite happy with that as we took bread and cheese to the beach every day for lunch. Back to the apartment at the end of the day for what became our usual beer and book for an hour on the balcony. In the evening we ate at Han Restaurant and had the lovely Meditteranean Surprise meal which was recommended on here. Wine was a bit expensive but good. Went on to Vanilla Bar to watch the Real Madrid/Barcelona game into the early morning.
Thursday 30 August 2012
Alarm on for trip to Akyaka a lovely little resort, nice for swimming. Left at 3:30 p.m. and lay around the pool when we arrived back at the apartment. Mine'm Restaurant for dinner and Corner Bar for cocktails and watching Liverpool match.
Friday 31 August 2012
Up early for morning at Turunc Hotel Spa for Turkish Bath, massage and facial. Booked another session for a couple of days before we go home. Back to apartment then on to J&M travel to change money. Did some shopping and back to apartment for lunch on balcony then sunbathed around pool in afternoon. Korfez restaurant for dinner, had Chateau Briand as recommended, it was beautiful, a definite for next time. On to Corner bar for cocktails and watched Chelsea match.
Saturday 1 September 2012
Today walking to Amos. First did some washing. Came across Antik Restaurant on our way and booked for the Turkish night in the evening. We walked past Amos to the ruins, fantastic views but over 200 steps to the top. Walked back down to amos and after eating lunch at Amos Restaurant (the only restaurant) we sunbathed on rather uncomfortable wooden beds and caught the 5:00 p.m. water taxi back to Turunc. Our usual beer and read on the balcony and then got ready to go to Antik Restaurant for the Turkish night. This was a really good value evening with meze, BBQ and dancers who got everyone up. 25TL each plus drinks. Situated at the back of town opposite road to Amos.
Sunday 2 September 2012
Another beach day. Evening another Turkish night in Marmaris, this time arranged by J&M Tours. A great fun evening. Free wine, beer and soft drinks, meze, chicken kebab with rice, salad and chips with melon for desert. Good friendly crowd on our table.
Monday 3 September 2012
Market day but beach day for us and back to the pool late afternoon, usual drink on balcony. Ate at Fidans in the evening. Bream with salad, quite expensive but lovely fish. Had Baileys coffee at Cardeck Bar – below Es apartments – before long climb back to our room.
Tuesday 4 September 2012
After breakfast we booked a table in the restaurant for someone we met on the Turkey Night and then caught the water taxi to Icmeler. Had a walk around Icmelar and walked along the promenade into the old town in Marmaris witha couple of stop offs on the way – Cafe del Mar for iced Baileys coffee and Blanca restaurant for a beer. Ate lunch in Marmaris old town on sea front – restaurant Spoon. Walked around the designer shops and through the bazaar and caught the 6:00 p.m. water taxi back to Turunc. Drink on balcony. On our way out we stopped off at the restaurant for a G&T with our friend we had booked into the restaurant then on to Can restaurant for good food and as it turned out very good company. Can recommend the ice cream desert with walnuts, almonds and toffee sauce, will be going back for that next time.
Wednesday 5 September 2012
Recovering from all our walking of yesterday with a day on the beach at Mine'm – free sunbeds. Musti for dinner in the evening. We succumbed to chocolate fudge cake but didn't enjoy it.
Thursday 6 September 2012
Today we went on Musti's boat trip. Should have been 5 bays but scheduled only 3 due to strong currents – Kadaga Bay, Akiya Bay lunch stop. This was a very sad stop as Simba the dog died here, we think he swallowed a bee. He had convulsions and a speed boat came out to take him to a vet but he died before he got there. We returned to Turunc after lunch as no one was in the mood for continuing. Drinks were brought out for everyone so we could drink a toast to Simba. We arrived back at 3:30 p.m. and finished off the afternoon around the pool. We then went for a walk round and had an ice cream next to the tea gardens. We did some shopping, changed money and returned to the apartment. Went to Elif John Restaurant in the evening, it was very busy and we had to wait for a table. We booked Kleftiko for Saturday evening . Went on to No Bambu Bar.
Friday 7 September 2012
Today we walked to Kumlubuk, left the apartment at 10:25 and arrived at 11:45. We had a beer at Deden Restaurant/Bar and then lunch at Serendipity Restaurant up by the Yacht Club and sunbathed there and got the boat back to Turunc at 4:45 pm. We much preferred this resort to Amos. In the evening we ate at Istanbul Restaurant. First course and dessert were provided free. Went on to Bros Bar to watch England v Moldova.
Saturday 8 September 2012
Back to Turunc Hotel for Turkish bath with honey and milk instead of salt scrub and also had a hot stone massage and facial, cost £120 for 2 of us. Back to apartment, had lunch by pool and stayed there for rest of day. After shower and change we went to do some holiday shopping for presents. Went back to Ely John Restaurant for our kleftiko and banana pancakes. Back to Corner Bar on way back for cocktails.
Sunday 9 September 2012
Our last day which was spent on the beach. Went shopping for final presents and had an ice cream at the tea gardens and ate at Es Apartments in the evening. We had pre-ordered the leg of lamb which was slow cooked, it could have fed 6 but we managed to eat it all! It was all beautifully presented and carved at our table. We still managed to fit in banana splits and irish coffees and G&Ts and a bottle of wine. It was an expensive meal but well worth it.
Monday 10 September 2010
Going home today. Minibus came at 11:20 a.m. and we changed to the main coach in Marmaris. Arrived at airport at 1:55 p.m. Went to McDonalds which was really expensive. The plane left 10 minutes early. We found we had seats by the emergency exit with extra leg room which we hadn't aid for, some had but we kept quiet. Arrived in Manchester at 18:30 and arrived home at 20:25.
We have already booked to go back. We loved Turunc and can see us going back for some years to come.
Great trip report, thanks for posting and glad you had a good holiday.
We were there at the same time but didn't accomplish very much at all compared with you. The sunbeds were too comfortable and the reading matter too good! We stayed at the Zeybek - great location, basic, small rooms but very well priced. No complaints.
We did enjoy Musti's boat trip (so much we did it twice) and it was utterly tragic that Simba died in that way. We ate out all over the place but I confess, and I know many will disagree with me, I don't find Turkish food all that great!
Seife's kitchen was very authentically Turkish and home cooked and great value but there's more atmosphere on Neptune. We liked Tapas Mapas and thought Elif's was the best food. We had a couple of good nights in the Palette bar watching football with surprisingly good and inexpensive food. Probably the cheapest food was at Cinar - great for a lunch but a bit basic for evening. Korfez was good and their bread is wonderful!
The disappointment was Bondjuk which had been highly recommended. We found the place a bit pretentious with average food and service that bordered on grovelling.
We loved Turunc - the people were lovely, the place is beautiful and we'll definitely be going back!
I've been looking at next year and fancy a week in Turunc and a week in Dalyan. Does anybody know the best way to travel between these resorts? I may post this question elsewhere on the site.
We go to Icmeler every year but love Turunc, unfortunately I dont like the mountain road so hopefully one day they may build a bigger road.
I am surprised you bought anything from Mc Donalds in Dalaman as it is notorious for being extortionate. We always take sandwiches and a drink which are now allowed through security.
Roma,My friend is going to Dalyan and Icmeler next year and has booked a private transfer between the 2 resorts.
Only bad point in your report was about poor Simba - he was a real character in Turunc, everyone knew him - he so loved going out on the boat trips, really joined in with everyone. He will be very sadly missed.
Sounds like you had quite an energetic holiday, lots of walking at a time when it's still pretty hot. We love walking there but usually only when it's not so hot, earlier in the season!
It is such a friendly place, you'll find when you go back that you'll be remembered and greeted as old friends.
There's lot of people like you, who get hooked and keep returning year after year!
